He's your homeboy. Can't you talk to him and put some sense into his head?

Could this be considered better than "guys who can catch?"

:-k

Hendry is an idiot. New owners please.

We tried this once already, jim. His name was Juan Pierre and it didn't work out so well.

Dodgers are looking to trade Pierre this offseason...

This is a good one from Lou too

Our hitting coach (Gerald Perry) has been to the Dominican," Piniella said. "We've tried to impress on him, 'Let's get a little more compact with your swing. Let's be a little more patient, a little more selective at home plate. Let's bunt a little bit more. Hit the ball to left field a little more and stay on the ball longer. Let's get on base and get your on-base percentage up,' because he can really help us defensively."

I'm all for patience, but how long has Pie been in the organization? It's like the Don Baylor Corey Patterson dance all over again.

That alone should get them thinking about what they want from a hitter. Why did they let him go? OK, now apply that to other hitters. The Fool me once theory should be applied here Mr. Hendry.

Other than the bunt thing, I don't see anything wrong with Lou stressing OBP to Pie.

What's wrong with drag bunting once in a while?

Who wouldn't want that? The problem is that it's a little late now. This could also be the reason why Pie is performing dismally in the DR league.

I don't know, I think we've seen this show before.

I suppose NY's issue is that the whole "long swing guy, needs to bunt more, etc" comments sound exactly like what screwed up Corey from 2002-2004. Pie's supposed to be a middle of the order hitter based on skillset, so from that point of view you probably don't want to be screwing around with his swing.

I have more faith in Lou than I did in Dusty to not completely jerk Pie around, but I can see the paralells.

I agree I don't want them to fool around too much and keep changing his swing but having a long swing is not really a good thing and by going to a quick compact swing may actually increase power and decrease the K's.

I also agree that he shouldn't focus on drag bunting too much because it'll make him lose focus at times, his mental edge and get him behind in the count if he's making too many attempts and fouling them off or missing them. But, I do think it's a good thing if they can teach him to recognize the right pitch and do it right. I do have more faith in Lou as Bruce said his staff work very hard unlike Bakers who's staff did not.

They've been stressing this to Pie for at least the past year. That's what they were working with him the entire season on. Plus, Pie played dismally in the DR league last year as well.

I see no problem with what they're doing. Pie and Patterson have completely different types of swings. Pie's problem is that he cannot get around on inside pitches (which is why he was terrible in the majors, they fed him a steady diet of inside fastballs) and so shortening his swing will help with that.

I've always thought Pie has a tremendously long swing. I don't think he is a big power guy, despite the early projections. I'd be thrilled if he could hit 12-15 HR a year with 35+ doubles.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with him trying to cut his swing down a bit.

Yep, just change his A-C's.

Oh Jesus!

Carl Crawford, your table is ready. Bring him home from Nashville, Mr. Hendry.

But why does Hendry come out and essentially say exactly what we're looking for? Does he not realize that he loses hand in potential trades when other teams infer that we need (and are willing to overpay for) their players?

Makes no difference what Hendry or any other GM says in the press. Every GM knows what every other GM is looking for. It's a very small world, and if you remember, the GMs all had a big show and tell meeting at the GM meetings last month, upsetting the players association to no end.

Thanks for your reply, Bruce. Do you believe that the Cubs will soon obtain what they're looking for since Hendry and other GMs have been so straightforward about their needs?

Also, is the MLBPA alleging collusion again, and if so, will there be action taken against owners?

Have a great time in Nashville. Thanks in advance for helping to keep us in the loop!

Don't know if a collusion case will be filed. After all, Torii Hunter and Scott Linebrink did pretty well for themselves. As far as getting what the Cubs want, we'll see. It takes two to deal, whether it's a trade or a free-agent signing. I don't see Tampa Bay trading Crawford, especially after they dealt Young. His contract is pretty favorable to the Rays, anyway. The Cubs No. 1 target is Fukudome. We'll see what happens there, too. The Cubs will be dangling several of their pitchers.

When you say dangling several of their pitchers, do you mean just putting their names out and saying that they can be had for the right price, or actively trying to trade them? And which pitchers are you referring to? Anyone that might surprise us?

It's a little of both. Marshall, Gallagher, Veal are all names I've heard. The Cubs do not want to trade Rich Hill, and it would take an awful lot for them to change their minds on this. Hill pitche nearly 200 innings in each of the last two seasons (majors and minors in '06) and the Cubs feel he'll get only better.

Hate to have to make your visits here into Q&As but is there the slightest bit of rumblings on Tejada. It's driving me nuts that we have this obsession going on with getting a lefty bat in the lineup, and coupled with our glaring hole at SS, yet Tejada's name is never brought up. And Baltimore seems like they're just dying to give him away as well.

From what I've been told, and I've asked, Tejada costs too much for the Cubs in terms of money. Unless something changes, I don't see him ending up here.
