Chicago Cubs pitcher Robert Hernandez was suspended for 50 games Thursday by the baseball commissioner's office after testing positive for the steroid stanozolol under the sport's minor league drug program. The 19-year-old right-hander was 8-9 with a 4.34 ERA in 20 starts last season with Peoria of the Midwest League and currently is assigned to the same club.

NO! Not Robert Hernandez. Wait, who's Robert Hernandez?

Our #17 prospect according to Baseball America and the youngest starting pitcher in the entire Midwest League last year.

Well crap. :( No wonder Acosta is starting today.

I guess badnews' Scott Taylor comps were pretty applicable after all.

He IS my favorite guy in the lower levels, probably in the whole system. And I know the Tranny Tiger is a big fan too.

Definitely sucks, he needs the innings since he's so young.

i think he'd prefer that you not use that abbreviation

wasn't hernandez like 6'4" and about a buck seventy? that might explain why he was trying to beef up.

A little shorter than that, but yeah, he's ridiculously thin. Listed at 6'2" - 165 lbs.

And I used the abbreviation because I knew he'd love it.

I thought it was rather brilliant.

Peoria Journal-Star[/url]"]"As an organization we educate these guys," Chiefs manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We talk to them as an organization on how not to do that. As an organization we're all in favor of the policy that's in place."

The Chiefs were informed of the suspension late Wednesday night, and Hernandez returned to the Cubs minor-league complex in Arizona.

Ugh.

Oneri on Hernandez' suspension:

When pitcher Robert Hernandez is eligible to return from his suspension for steroid use, the 19-year-old will have to re-earn his spot in Peoria's rotation.

"He put himself in a situation where he has to see if we have a spot open for him," Cubs vice president of player personnel Oneri Fleita said.

Fleita said the suspension could be a positive for the pitcher who's ranked the No. 17 prospect in the Cubs system.

"As a youngster you'd rather them know that they made mistakes like that now than later on in their career," Fleita said. "He's got youth on his side and great ability."

Hernandez will work out with Cubs minor-leaguers who remain at extended spring training in Mesa, Ariz. until the 50-game suspension is over.

"We'll look to get him the innings this season, if not we'll get him some in winter ball," Fleita said. "From that standpoint I just hope he learned a lesson."

A 19 yr old kid doing roids, that's terrible for his body.

not really.

Not really? Do you know anything about steroids because the side effects of taking them, especially at a young age is detrimental to your health.

I would read up on Stanozolol before spouting off like this, if I were you.

Is everyone brain washed by the media?

Why don't you read up a bit on it yourself. Do you know what kind of damage this can do to your liver when taken orally? If you think anabolic steroids are ok, you are being foolish. No, I'm not brainwashed by the media and I've done my research on certain anabolic steroids. There's a reason why wrestlers and other steroid abusers die before they hit 50.

Little Lord Fontenot is more of an annoyance than a troll. Give the kid a break.

Stanozolol is a pretty weak steriod and doesnt have a lot of toxic side effects. I dont know whether he was taking the oral or injectable version so im not a liberty to say the potential side effects to his liver, but even 1 or 2 cycles a year of the oral isnt red flag alert. Doctors prescribe it to AIDS patients because they can be on it for an extended period of time and it helps prevent the body from 'wasting',plus it is relatively safe for women. As a 19 year old he has plenty of natural test and growth hormone and shouldnt need the anabolics. Stanozolol is a weird steriod because it doesnt make you much stronger or build up muscle mass but its one of the few that allows you to run faster or throw harder<---so how hard does/can he really throw.
