Wait, Mike Piazza has a wife? Where did all those gay rumors surface from?

And oh yeah, Soto's not getting replaced lololol.

"After discussing my options with my wife, family and agent, I felt it is time to start a new chapter in my life," he said in a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano.

Dan Lozano: Well Mike, your options are staying home and not playing baseball, or leave the house and not play baseball. Your choice!

Remember when we almost traded for him in 98?

The story went that the Cubs had their offer in, the Marlins had accepted it (or at least looked close to accepting it ) and Piazza's agent called him while he was in the shower and told him to pack for Chicago.

Then the Mets topped the offer.

I never knew that.

I never knew that either. I wish I knew what players were rumored to go in that deal.

Piazza hit .348/.417/.607 that year for the Mets. Imagine what his production would have done to the Wild Card Race. The Cubs probably wouldn't have needed the one game playoff to clinch, the pitching staff would actually have been set so that Mark Clark wouldn't have had to pitch game 1.

Imagine what his presence in the lineup would have done to Sosa's numbers that year as well.

I'm pretty sure names like Garland, Noel, Cline, and Duncan were supposed to be going in the deal, but I could be wrong.

Who, who, who, who and who?

Another name to add to one of the greatest HOF classes ever. Probably Maddux, Smoltz, Martinez, Bonds, Glavine, Piazza, and anyone else that I missed.

you assume they all retire this year?

Pretty sure Bonds and Piazza will be in the ridiculous class with Sosa, Clemens, and Biggio since they didn't/probably won't play this season.

They would be Jon Garland, Todd Noel (former 1st rd pick, I think, who was then traded for Felix Heredia), Pat Cline (catcher) and Courtney Duncan (pitcher).

Considering Garland is the only one who did anything of any real note in the majors (and was traded for the great Matt Karchner), that would have been a truly awesome trade. Of course, trading just about any Cub minor leaguer in the system at that point wouldn't have been bad at all.

So does he go in as a Met or a Dodger?

probably the mets. piazza's indicating that was the best time of his career.

"But I have to say that my time with the Mets wouldn't have been the same without the greatest fans in the world. One of the hardest moments of my career, was walking off the field at Shea Stadium and saying goodbye. My relationship with you made my time in New York the happiest of my career and for that, I will always be grateful."

Well, I guess that makes two great classes in a row. The first group certainly will generate some discussion with Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa. Biggio and Piazza should get in on the first ballot while Sosa (because of speculation), Bonds, and Clemens might have to wait. The next year Maddux, Martinez, Smoltz, Glavine, and possibly Randy Johnson could all be eligible. Can you imagine those five in their prime as your starting rotation?

i think it's hilarious that you guys think all those guys are first ballot hall of famers

not that they SHOULDN'T be, but come on. look at what the voters have done recently. i'm sure a couple of those guys need to "wait a few years" or "can't be first ballot inductees because players X, Y and Z didn't make it on the first ballot"

The only reasons that I can think of as to why any of these players doesn't make the HOF on the first ballot are:

Bonds - Steroids

Clemens -Steroids

Sosa - speculation of steroids

Johnson - short of 300 wins

Piazza - poor defense

Biggio, Maddux, Martinez, Glavine, Smoltz are all cinch 1st ballot HOF.

The numbers would make all 10 of them 1st ballot HOF.

Piazza - arguably the greatest offensive catcher in the history of the game
