General manager John Mozeliak declined to discuss details but confirmed negotiating with Lohse's representative. Multiple sources indicated that the deal could be similar to the four-year, $48 million contract signed by Carlos Silva with Seattle last winter, and that the average annual value of Lohse's deal will exceed $10 million.

Wowsers! Dempster just got more expensive

If Lohse is worth $10+ mil a year (and he's not), Dempster should be worth $20-25 mil a year. Wow, that would be a dumb signing by Mozeliak.

CC Sabathia will now be worth a mid sized European nation.

10 years, $500 million should be about right if Lohse is getting 4/48.

By all means, make this signing. Lohse is a disaster waiting to happen. He had the best year of his professional life this season and still was only slightly better than league average.

They did do it, according to Rotoworld...

Cardinals agreed to terms with RHP Kyle Lohse on a four-year, $41 million contract.

Lohse will receive a $1.25 million signing bonus, $7,125,000 in 2009, $8,875,000 in 2010 and $11,875,000 in each of the final two seasons. He also gets a full no-trade clause. This all for a pitcher who signed a one-year, $4.25 million last March. Lohse's strikeout rate was as mediocre as ever this season. He has improved his command and he's always had pretty good stuff, but he could just as easily be a fourth starter as a No. 3 going forward. Durability is the biggest thing he has working in his favor. Still, we wouldn't want to take our chances on him being worth more than $23 million in 2011 and '12.

This really doesn't change the market value of Ryan Dempster. Prior to this deal he was going to get offers in the 5/60 range or 4/50, with someone likely pushing up to 5/70 or so.

I agree. Dempster's relative lack of success as a starter (prior to 2008) is roughly on par with Lohse. The Cards overpaid for Lohse, someone will overpay for Dempster, but the deals should be similar

If Lohse is getting 4 year at 41m, the cheapest we will probably get Dempster back at is for something like 4 year at 48m. For Dempster to sign that type of contract he would probably have to be giving the Cubs a home town discount(which I think he would be willing to do). But on the open market Dempster will get alot more then that, especially if he pitches well in the postseason. Right now I'm pretty 50/50 about Dempster coming back next year. I'm concerned that this could be a fluke season, but at the same time the guy always had good stuff, so many he finally figured it out. But the main reason why I want him, back is because letting him go would weaken our rotation alot. Rich Harden can get hurt at anytime, and Zambrano has had two non ace like seasons in a row now.

The Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox would like tothank the Cardinals for officially putting every respectable free agent pitcher out of every teams price range but their own.

pretty sure we're on that list too.

Demp resigning may hinge on what happens with Marquis. Although at that price maybe Marquis contract won't look that bad to another team.

Wow, full no trade clause, too. What a stupid move.

Maybe we can call thie new age of Cardinals baseball, "New Age of Stupid." There is no way Lohse should had gotten that contract. And the Cards are going to regret it when Lohse becomes the new Kip Wells.

The question is, for how long?
