Gillette on Wetteland

John Wetteland, Relief Pitcher

Wetteland will forever be remembered for standing on the mound -- peering out from underneath his grungy, sweat-stained cap -- after saving all four of the Yankees' victories in the 1996 World Series. The hard-throwing right-handed reliever with the power curveball was durable and often dominating from 1993-1999, first with the Expos, then the Yankees, then the Rangers. His 20-plus career Player Overall Wins means he was as good as other marginal Hall of Famers, but the fact that he led the league in saves only once and is only ninth on the all-time saves list means he will only get a smattering of votes before disappearing from the HOF ballot
