Guillermo Mota Failed his physical.

Rotoworld

WIP radio in Philadelphia is reporting that the Coco Crisp trade is being held up because Red Sox reliever Guillermo Mota failed his physical.

Concerns about Mota's elbow or shoulder are apparently providing a stumbling block, but they may not kill the deal. There's been talk of Red Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen being involved, with him maybe replacing Mota in the deal. It's also possible that David Riske could be taken out of the trade. If the Indians can get Andy Marte, they shouldn't let the relievers stand in the way. It's just too good of a trade for them. The Phillies would also come away disappointed if the Crisp deal doesn't go down, as they won't be getting Arthur Rhodes in return for Jason Michaels. Jan. 24 - 5:05 pm et

I'm not sure about the work ethic part. This is from his STATS Inc. scouting report: "While Michaels didn't help himself when he declined the team's suggestion that he play winter ball after the 2004 season, he remains an asset off the bench." In any case, if he's available for a middle reliever, the Cubs should get involved.

I don't think not going to Winter Ball is any indication of a poor work ethic, if a player has a off-season workout program at home. Was Patterson not going an indication?

Michaels is known as a gym rat who arrives early at the park, like Patterson, that speaks more to me than declining going to Winter Ball.

If you (as a player) feel you can get more out of an off-season program than playing Winter Ball, I support the player committed to working out all offseason in an environment that he feels can get the most out of him in the off-season.

If a player heads to PR, doesn't want to be there, and goes thru the motion for 40 or so games, he is not going to get anything out of it. Not wanting to go there just not show a poor work ethic, just basic desires.

Of course, a player should go over his off-season plan with the team before the off-season starts.

I think a player who doesn't want to play winter ball does have poor work ethic if your need more practice , work, college degree , in any profession you do it if you wish to suceed . Gym rat or not dumbells don't help you get a better read of the ball off the beat, pickoff moves, hitting a curve ball ect.

Gape Kapler was a gym rat and on the cover of Muscle Fitness a couple times guy made Farnsworht look small and now he's playing over in Japan because he couldn't do anything with all that muscle.

A gym rat is not someone who kills themselves in the weight room, a gym consists of video and batting cages, not something that will bulk you up beyond the point of being practical.

I consider Eckstein to be a gym rat as well and he probably could not bench my weight.

Spending an entire off-season watching video, working on mechanics, going thru improved workout facilities, individualized instructors.

Working with someone like Von Joshua or Clines would likely do more for Patterson than heading to Puerto Rico. Especially, if Patterson is not knowing what to look for as far as improving and needing the specialization of one on one teaching.

Apparently the deal is off

Apparently, the Indians will have to start all over again if they want to consummate a deal for Boston Red Sox third-base prospect Andy Marte and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jason Michaels.

A source with close ties to the Phillies revealed that Red Sox reliever Guillermo Mota failed a physical in Cleveland on Tuesday, an exam that presumably was the last step in a three-team trade that would have sent Tribe left fielder Coco Crisp, reliever David Riske and backup catcher Josh Bard to Boston in exchange for Marte, Mota and novice catcher Kelly Shoppach.

In the Philadelphia portion of the transaction, Arthur Rhodes was to be shipped to the Phillies in exchange for Michaels, who would have taken the place of Crisp in the Indians' outfield.

According to a baseball operative in Philadelphia, the Indians called with the news that Mota had flunked his physical and said, "The deal is dead."

The deal may not be off. However, some are speculating that a nine player deal involving the Reds and Austin Kearns may materialize.

Boston Hearld

Because reliever Guillermo Mota reportedly failed his physical in Cleveland yesterday, the Red Sox will have to restructure their deal in order to acquire Indians outfielder Coco Crisp, according to baseball sources.

The Indians were also going to trade left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes to Philadelphia for outfielder Jason Michaels, who would replace Crisp. That deal is still on, and the Phillies were told by the Indians that the Crisp-Sox trade was not dead.

... It is also believed that the Reds are interested in reviving the three-team talks that would produce a nine-player swap, in which Matt Clement would go to Cincinnati.

Rotoworld speculates

We're still not sure of the details here, but as reported earlier, Matt Clement would likely go to Cincinnati and Austin Kearns would be sent to Cleveland. We assume Andy Marte would still go Cleveland. Also, the agreed-upon Jason Michaels-for-Arthur Rhodes swap would probably be killed off. Jan. 25 - 3:28 am et

Boston Globe

Today's Cleveland Plain Dealer, citing a major league source, is reporting that the Rhodes-for-Michaels deal is poised to go through.

Looks like it's about time for the Red Sox to back away from the deal. From Rotoworld:

Coco Crisp - OF - Indians

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians want to both keep Guillermo Mota and have Manny Delcarmen added to what had been a six-player Coco Crisp trade.

It'd be Crisp, David Riske and Josh Bard to Boston for Andy Marte, Mota, Kelly Shoppach and Delcarmen. According to the report, the Red Sox said no to that swap and offered two lower-level prospects rather than Delcarmen, only to be turned down. In its original form, this was a bad deal for the Red Sox. It's past time that they walk away and find another solution to their center-field issues. Jan. 26 - 5:01 am et

Nothing like asking for a king's randsom for Crisp.

I wonder what the Cubs could have recieved for Corey? Maybe Boston wasn't interested?

If you think the fans here were tough on him...

The Sox must have realized that.

EXACTLY!!! In addition, the Red Sox really need some kind of known commodity in CF and at leadoff - they can't afford to put a project out there and hope for the best.

Last I heard on the radio over lunch was that Cleveland has told the Red Sox to put their best offer for Crisp on the table today - not sure if that means the deal is dead if it doesn't get done today or not, but just fyi.

Yep. When Boston newspapers reported that Corey was one of the available center fielders, they were clear to point out that he had the lowest OBP, highest strike out ratio, and fewest pitches per at bat among any of them. So, he was pretty much panned by the Boston press.

Yet another twist:

Jayson Stark reports the following:

An official of one team that spoke with the Indians reported Thursday he got the impression the odds of Cleveland trading Crisp had sunk below 50-50.

Multiple sources say Mota didn't technically "fail" his physical with the Indians. But his examination raised enough questions that the Indians have told Boston they will keep Mota only if the Red Sox upgrade the rest of the package...

...The Red Sox then would turn around and deal Kearns to Cleveland for Crisp, with several other players (yet to be determined) also switching area codes.

The team that may come out worst in all of this, though, is the Phillies. Had the original trade gone through, they would have wound up trading outfielder Jason Michaels to Cleveland for reliever Arthur Rhodes.

...The Phillies then would probably hang onto Michaels until spring training and shop him for a setup man in the spring.
