Chicago Tribune - The New York Mets are going to come after Carlos Zambrano, and they will hardly be alone. The Yankees and Red Sox could slot him into the spots that Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling currently fill. If Zambrano leaves, the Cubs would have money to spend but no safe bets to spend it on.

Yankees:

Wang

Mussina

Hughes

Petitte

Chamberlain

Kennedy

Red Sox:

Beckett

Matsuzaka

Buchholz

Wakefield

Lester

Neither one of them exactly needs help with their starting rotation.

I don't think Z is going anywhere.

He's gone. Hendry screwed this up, like he does everything else.

No he isn't. He wants to stay with the Cubs and SOMEHOW they'll get it done.

Sure, except he isn't going to wait until our sale gets sorted out. We had our window and we blew it.

I can almost guarantee that Zambrano stays in the National League.

Unless he has developed a sentimental attachment to the Cubs, I'm pretty sure he's going to go where the price is right first, regardless of league.

Yeah I doubt he'd take less money so he can bat.

Have you watched his ABs? He looks like he's more emotionally invested in his hitting than his pitching at times...

The Yankees need Zambrano more than the Red Sox, but any team in the majors could make room for a #1 starter if they had the money.

well, the sale will get sorted out before the season ends and free agency begins, so unless zambrano plans on signing with another team illegally, the cubs still have their chance.

Like re-signing Aramis? Or D-Lee? Or Kerry? Hendry has his faults, but he gets the players he wants re-signed. I realize this is a different situation with the impending sale, but I still think it gets done. Both sides want it to happen.

I really doubt Hendry is at fault for this one. Seems as though they were close to agreeing upon something in the 5/85 or 5/90 range back in April, then all of a sudden it's caput. I have to believe the ownership situation played a factor in the Cobs not putting the pen to paper on this one, as both sides still seem keen to get this thing done per the discussed terms.

I agree. It'll get done. As you said, both sides want it to happen. Also, I'm usually of the cynical mind that money is all important for athletes, but I don't think Zambrano will move to the AL and give up batting.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. Nobody here has the inside scoop on this.

I'm with the majority that Z probably re-signs, and if he doesn't, he's definitely not going AL.

I don't think he'll resign with the Cubs. I do think he'll wait and see if the Cubs match the best offer he gets I just doen't think the Cubs will.

I've heard whispers that the Cubs signed Z tonite for 5/$90. Source is pretty legit. Not 100%, but if it's done, heard here first. If not, don't take my dignity, as has been done with other people who posted speculative information that ended up false.
