Should the Phillies keep Abreu, it would be understandable. He is an All-Star for the second consecutive season, a .300 hitter with clout and speed. There should be no urgency to run him out of Philadelphia with the next waiver-wire click.

On the contrary, the Phillies should trade Abreu only for value -- for an overpowering young pitcher, or, better still, for an overpowering young personality who would add life and expectation to the clubhouse, something that Wade has been unable to provide through his succession of ordinary trades.

Something, though, must happen or the Phillies will continue to play about .500 baseball, finish out of the playoffs and wonder why that collection of talent never did sprout a pennant.

The Phillies need a franchise-defining personnel shift, and Bobby Abreu is at his highest value right now. Trade him before that value diminishes.

If Abreu was ever seriously dangled about by Philly, I would hope the Cubs would go after him hard. He is exactly what this team needs. I would also be terrified of the possibilty that another Philly/Cardinals trade could happen, while the Cubs watched on the sidelines.

Would you do Wood, Mitre and Dubois (or Kelton) for Abreu and a pitching prospect?

I think the chances of Wood waiving his no-trade to go to Philly are about a trillion to one.

Agreed, but that's not what I meant. Just asking whether you think such a trade would be worth it, if Abreu were available.

Seems Burrell's the guy they'd dangle. He's due lots of money from 06-08 and his stats haven't been spectacular.

Jmo but the Cubs should take a chance on him. His .900 ops would look nice in lf.

Get SF involved and send Patterson and Schmidt to Philly.

I remember Tim debating whether or not he'd trade Zambrano for Abreu straight up.

That would be an interesting deal, no?

Still, if Abreu's out there, I'd pretty much sell the farm for him.

That's what I was gonna say. The writer is describing Carlos Zambrano to a tee. Young powerful pitcher who adds life to the clubhouse...

Statistically speaking, I'd probably do it.

Unfortunatley, I <3 Z. If it was up to me, my attatchment to the awesomeness Z brings to the table would keep me from doing the deal.

Uh, uhm. Yea, I could see myself loving him.

Zambrano & Patterson for Abreu, Lofton, & prospect.

what about padilla as well? I know he has been awful but he has shown signs in the past of being dominant. Maybe Rothschild can turn him around....sprinkle some of that magic powder Dusty carries around.

Done and Done-

And I mean done.....

Just due to his age, Z could command a lot of value in the trade market. I wonder if Hendry has peddled his name in the market any.

I would be very sad to see Zambrano go, but if the Cubs also went hard after AJ Burnett I think I would get over it.

This is a great example of why people consider writers morons.

I love Bobby Abreu but I really don't like that he's 31 years old.

Yeah he is prolly really 33-34.

I would gamble with Z like others said though.

Z, Patterson for Abreu and Lofton would be great

What about

Z, Patterson, Mitre, Wellemeyer for Abreu Lofton Wagner :D

Philly would have to eat so much of Abreu's contract in a Zambrano/Abreu deal, that in the end it just wouldnt be worth it.

I mean, are the Cubs going to add like 15 million to the payroll for the rest of Bobby's career?

He's due a combined $29 mil for the next two years, then a team option for $16 mil in 2008. He also has a no-trade clause.

Love to trade for him, but no way I'd deal Z for him tho.
