Can Bruce Miles be an MLB manager?

We could sure use those ideas practiced on this team.

Thanks for the sentiments but no, thanks. I have a hard enough time with the English language. And my recent forays into sabermetrics have taken me into the dangerous world of numbers.

I'll remain your loyal servant and gadfly to the Cubs.

Bruce!

Tell us: Is what's going on just the beginning, or a move on it's own?

BTW, great article today!

Bruce, if you have time, I'm getting pretty worried about something.

It's obvious that Dusty doesn't like to play Hairston. Maybe I'm off, but it seems that way to me. Everyone is assuming that Hairston goes over to CF now, but do you think Dusty is planning on putting Holly or Burnitz in center? I guess doing that would mean that Murton would get some PT, but it also might mean that Macias starts at second base, and Hairston sits next to Ronny on the bench for 10 days or so.

Do you have any idea on what Dusty is planning to do with positions?

I believe this is just the beginning. Whatever else you want to say about Hendry, one thing he won't do is sit still. I'm running an analysis piece in tomorrow's Daily Herald (shameless plug). I hope we stay dry down here. They're predicting lots of rain for the weekend, but I don't know when it's going to start.

I'm not sure yet. My guess is that Hairston will play center. That's one of the things I'm going to ask during the pregame press conference. To me, Murton must play every day. As I wrote, I liked the way Bobby Cox worked those kids into the Atlanta lineup. It needs to be done here.

Thanks, fingers crossed, I guess.

In a chat session, Bruce, you once agreed with me that the futures of Baker and Hendry are pretty much tied to one another. Do you still feel that way? Personally, I don't see Dusty getting shown the door anytime soon, but there is a lot of speculation (not unexpected) that he may be wearing out his welcome. Thoughts?

Bruce,

does anyone ever ask Dusty point blank why he says things like "cedeno is here to play" and then sticks with neifi despite his nosedive?

"someone fire up the ......BRUCE SIGNAL!.....sorry, really sounded more dramatic in my head-anyway-thanks for the time Mr. Miles-and most importantly the inside scoops!

Just shows you that I'm reading the site every day.

Now if we could only get Dusty to do the same...

No offense meant to Dusty, but I don't think he seems like the kind of guy that would sit down at a computer in the first place. Kind of like I would expect my grandfather to use such a confounding machine.

Having said that, he likely carries a labtop, IPod, Blackberry...

There's one axiom that goes that a GM gets one manager to fire. Dusty is Jim's first manager. The key pivot point here may be how Dusty uses the kids. Yes, their futures are tied together, but if Jim at some points feels he must fire Dusty (that time inevitably comes for all GMs), he'll be allowed to do it and stay on. The Cubs value Hendry's overall contributions since he came on board 10 years ago.

(Psst. Bakersdozen, Batman's real name is Bruce Wayne. Thus, it technically already is a Bruce signal. Spend more time watching cartoons.)

We pose tough questions, such as the Cedeno one, to Dusty every day. Sometimes we get a satisfactory answer, sometimes not. One thing I can tell you for sure: he wasn't questioned as hard in San Francisco, and I think this has been somewhat of a culture shock to him. He claims he doesn't read our stories, so I don't think he surfs NSBB.

Okay, that being said (and if you have time), do you personally beleive dusty is on his way out?

Also, I saw it posted somewhere today that the cubs were no longer looking for a "fix" at the trading deadline, but rather a couple of young guys for the future. Is this true? Is the organization really giving up on this year? ( I think giving up is a bad idea, considering we still have 14 games to play with St. Louis)

Bruce, I agree. I think Hendry has done a good job with the exception of maybe relying too much on injury plagued players coming in to this season. He took a gamble and it didn't work, he has still put together a pretty good core of young players and should be given the opportunity to fix his mistakes. With a fair amount of money available to him this offseason and any more changes I am assuming he is going to make yet this year he should be able to put something together.
