Why would somebody be called up?

MLB rosters expand from 25 to 40 players on September 1st.

I'll set the over/under on Soto starts at 2. Any takers?

Starts? No way I take the over on that one. AB, maybe, but not starts...

Mitre, Hill, and Soto were supposed to be the first three, I believe.

 

Yep. At least according to the Trib

 

Left-hander Rich Hill is expected to join the Cubs on Friday as a September call-up. Hill, who was 0-2 with an 8.57 ERA in seven appearances earlier, will be used out of the bullpen. At least two more players—pitcher Sergio Mitre and catcher Geovany Soto—also will be called up.

Why did we call up a catcher? :?

 

Valuable third stringer - on days Blanco starts, it'll be easier to use Barrett as a PH because you don't have to worry about Macias stepping in at catcher in an emergency. This isn't the first time the Cubs - or another team - have added a third catcher come September. Soto could be a good backup catcher in the future and it would be nice to get him some playing time now.

Most teams call up a 3rd catcher at this time of the year. Gives them more flexability to use the other 2 for flip flops and pinch hitting in the last month.

OK. I just figured I'd post a topic in Transactions because it has been said here that Hill, Mitre, and Soto are SUPPOSED to be called up. I was just posting to confirm that Hill had been called up.
