Is anyone else worried about this?

From Cubs.com:

"The Cubs' starting pitching is likely set. Carlos Zambrano, Mark Prior, Greg Maddux, Jerome Williams and Glendon Rusch all are candidates for the rotation as well as youngsters Angel Guzman and Rich Hill. Kerry Wood will be coming back from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, and wasn't expected to be ready by Opening Day but is progressing well in his rehab.

"I'm happy with what we have but at the same time if things got redirected and we could add another starter, I wouldn't rule that out," Hendry said of his pitching staff. "If we have what we have, I'm OK with that."

Zambrano and Prior are obviously set, but rounding out the rotation with Maddux, Williams, and Rusch? Also I didn't realize Kerry wouldn't be ready by opening day.

im just about done with the jerks who run the cubs

I really think another starter is on Hendry's wish list. I don't see him going into the season with a 5th starter in Rusch and not knowing what he's going to get out of Wood. I think he trades for an innings eater like Zito, Livan Hernandez, Vazquez, or Lowe.

seriously thatll be the last freaking straw, if wood isn't ready at the start of spring training, ill be comepltely done with the cubs.

the a's might sign overrated pitchers to 3 year deals just like the cubs, but as least they dont charge their pitchers out there even though their hurt, AFTER the team is out of the race, no less.

This organization never surprises me.

im going to give it one last chance chance to surprise me. if it does, it's all over.

when he's not ready for spring, they'll say they never figured he'd be ready by the spring. and they won't mention anything about his meaningless bullpen outings.

What bullpen outings???

Please, management supporters, remember, people were saying it was idiotic for wood to be pitching out of the bullpen when it was happening. There is no hindsight involved here. Edited by Careless

I am too optimistic sometimes. I have been saying I fully expect Kerry to break down by mid-season, but it appears he will be broken on Opening Day.

I was one of the more upset ones when it came to the Cubs using Wood out of the pen, when it was known he was having surgery at the end of the year and the team was done.

It was completely idiotic at that point in time, but I'm going to wait and see if Wood is ready, if he isn't, it might take the cake as far as being the dumbest decision this organization has made during the Hendry/Baker tenure.

If Furcal goes elsewhere (and if he does, let's hope it's to Tampa so the Cubs can get involved on these Lugo talks), I'd be tempted to throw the 5/50 contract at Burnett and see if he's interested. But that's just me. Maddux is gone after this season and Wood very well could be.

This is GM speak for "I know I need another starter, I want another starter. However, I'm not going to display that I really need another one so that I can maintain my position when it comes to negotiations, as I don't want to be dealing from a point of desperation. I'm not going to overpay for a starter."

There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever if Kerry Wood is not in the starting rotation on Opening Day. I'm baffled that the Cubs are already dropping subtle hints that Wood's rehab is progressing but he might not be ready. Give me a break.

Relax, guys. Everything I've read has said that Kerry will be ready by Opening Day. Just because Carrie freakin Muskat says that he wont be isn't exactly cause for concern.

I hope you're right Mizzou, it just makes me nervous considering the Cubs' lack of honesty in the past when it comes to their starting pitchers.

My gut feeling is Wood will always be injured from this day forward. You know what I mean? I just don't think he's a guy that can come back an pitch a full year without getting injured at some point. Maddux is cool and all but his career is about over. I just hope he does not completely tank this season. Prior I can't tell what he will do. Zambrano is fine. So, yeah I hope Jim can muster up a new quality pitcher. Not saying Burnett but someone decent. We shall see.

I haven't read a single thing that said he'd be ready.

I've read that they hope he's ready, but they really don't know. I highly doubt he'll start on time in February. He probably won't be ready by opening day. Of course, they'll never admit their stupidity with the bullplen thing that is largely responsible for all the doubt.

It's not hard to predict how this will go down.

They'll need to "bring him along slowly". Long toss. Towel drills. Sim outings. He'll be babied to the nth degree, and then, lo and behold, it'll be the end of March and he'll be 3 weeks behind schedule, and you'll hear rumors of rehab assignments, extended ST, etc, etc.

And of course, no one who interviews Hendry or Baker will bring up the idiotic bullpen experiemtn of 2005, which cost Wood about 3 weeks of unecessary time before surgery.

If it's any different than that, I owe everyone who disagrees a coke.

There is no reason in the world for Wood to not be ready by opening day. I had surgery to repair a TORN labrum (Kerry's was only frayed) by one of the finest orthopaedic surgeons in the midwest and was told that it would be 6 months at the longest to a full recovery. I specifically asked him about Wood's injury at the time since my Dr was also a big Cubs fan. He told me that from what he knew of the injury, he saw no reason why he would not be completely ready by the beginning of February at the latest.

I have not participated in rehab as aggressively as prescribed, and I am an entire month ahead of schedule. Wood had his surgery at the end of August if memory serves. Even if his recovery takes a full 6 months, that puts him at March 1. How in the world can he not be ready for opening day?
