Hendry needs a beating if he starts after Burnett...preferably a severe one.

Easy on the hyperbole M&P. I don't want Burnett either, but he's still produced well.

Sorry. I just don't want another Kerry Wood contract, paying someone 10M+ for a season of nothing. If he gets a 5 year deal, that's fairly likely considering that he's had 2 TJS. Hendry loves to take risks, but if you take enough of them, you get burned. I'd rather not take a high price / medium reward risk. it's fine to take a flier on guys like Dempster and Williamson, where the worst case scenario doesn't hamper us for 50M+/5.

I would much rather see them go after Weaver than Burnett. Weaver is NEVER hurt and will put up good numbers. He will also be cheaper than Burnett. If the Cubs get Burnett I will be very upset. I have faith in Hendry but if gets Burnett before the other holes are filled I will not be looking forward to '06

I think Hendry might be on to something. Maybe he should follow the mold of the Bears and load up on guys that "can catch the ball," a dominant starting staff and a much improved bullpen. Who cares about the offense, Neifi has experience leading off and a Jacque Jones pickup would improve the defense in the OF.

I hope they address their OF problems before going after another pitcher. That is unless the do both in one deal (Bradley & Lowe from the Dodgers).

I have to say that it is true. We still haven't improved our offense one bit.

Yes, that is accurate. The Cubs have yet to improve their offense over last season. Though, the order in which they acquire players is completely unimportant to me. I couldn't care less if the Cubs sign a starter next and then go get their OFers. What matters to me is how well those players are likely to perform and how much they cost to acquire.

lmao, this is what Rotoworld had to say about the Burnett pursuit:

Well, he's probably a better hitter than Neifi Perez, but can he really play shortstop? The Cardinals and Blue Jays appear to be the top suitors for Burnett at the moment, though the Mets, Nationals, Rangers and Mariners could also be in the running.

Agreed. but it worries me that a move hasn't been made, especially now that we lost out on the Furcal sweepstakes.

Good point. I'd much rather give 5/50 to a pitcher than a non-ARod/Tejada shortstop.

The report of Furcal's intentions to sign with LA came out less than 24 hours ago, and you are already worried that Hendry hasn't made a signing or a trade yet?

Yes, I am worried. I get worried throughout the entire offseason. Is there a problem with that?

Oh, you are worried throughout the offseason. Okay. I thought you were saying that you were worried that Hendry hadn't made a move since losing out on Furcal. In that case, enjoy.

Just to mention, there is a poll at ESPN with the prediction for trades in the upcoming winter meetings. There is a lot of players that has a high chance to be traded to the Cubs, but ESPN never mentioned the Cubs as possible suitors. There is no love for the cubbies at ESPN.

Thats because the Mets are signing them all.

im officially suicidal. we're in a lose-lose situation. either we give up too much for somebody like furcal (even that didnt work), pierre, damon, burnett, etc or we do nothing at all.

if we do nothing we'll finish 20-30 games below .500 and last in the division. i guess im still for bringing in pierre and bradley like everybody else even though both are pipe dreams

2006 cubbies:

SS cedeno

2B walker

1B lee

3B ramirez

RF burnitz (re-signed)

C barrett

LF murton

CF patterson

SP1 zambrano

SP2 rusch

SP3 maddux

SP4 williams

SP5 mitre

Injured: Kerry Wood, Mark Prior

other notable likely outcomes: burnitz hitting .260 in the 5th hole. cedeno going 1-4 on opening day and getting benched by dusty for neifi until the last week of the season. jerome williams, rusch, maddux, and mitre averaging a 5.50 ERA. and finally poor zambrano producing a 1.50 ERA and finishing the season with 5 wins despite pitching 220 innings.

Very clever, Jim. Drive up the bidding for Burnett with an insane $39m/3yr offer, then the favourites to sign him will have to guarantee a fifth year in order to get him. The favourites being the Cardinals. So Burnett signs with the Cardinals, requires his third, fourth and fifth Tommy John surgeries before the contract is up, and mwahaha the Cards will have spent just as much on an injured and ineffective pitcher as you have on Eyre, Howry, Neifi, Macias, Rusch and your next three stupid signings all put together!

Just make sure that he doesn't accept your $39m/3yr offer. Don't want to get burned with a player you don't even need.

Likewise, especially on the Cubs...where Cedeno's production will not be that far Furcal's this year, let alone for the life of the contract.

I'd offer that to Burnett. It would eclipse the Cards offer by 1 year/10 mil. It was tough for the Cards to offer 4 yrs to Burnett, so there's no chance they'd go to 5 years If the Cubs don't want to do 5, they could offer 4/44, also beating the Cards and Jays.

Are Derek Lee and Burnett friends?
