Preston Wilson's agent has told the Cubs that they're the free agent outfielder's first choice.

The Cubs could do worse in right field than Wilson, assuming that he's willing to take a one-year deal. It's a better idea than giving Jacque Jones the three-year deal he's requesting. Dec. 15 - 4:16 am et

I gladly take Preston Wilson at ONE yr deal, especially if the Cubs keep the flexibility and wait till next yr when Cliff Floyd, and Carlos Lee becomes available.

Agreed, and Wilson can be a july trade bait shoudl the Cubs be out of the race or, if in the race, can easily be replaced due to not amassing a large salary for him

And Wilson for one or two years is a lot better than Jones for three.

I would be fine with Burnitz...I mean Wilson in right. Walker better be kept for 2nd just to have a guy that can hit left handed on this team. Also, since Baker is the manager I see Mabry getting a lot of playing time in left because he brings the Cubs that much needed lefty bat if Wilson is signed. Edited by CuseCubFan69

I'm fairly certain the Cubs will be out of the race if Preston Wilson is the starting RFer. Especially if they still trade Walker (which I believe they will). I really can't believe we're at the point that people are trying to put a positive spin on the Jones/Wilsons of the world.

If Hendry can somehow break Ugie out of stir in Venezuala trade for pudge and Kevin Brown then we could cheer on the Chicago Marlins

I can't believe we're going to end up adding another guy who strikes out every 3-4 AB's!!! Preston Wilson is going to LOVE Baker's hitting philosophy of "swing at anything close!"

All I can say is our starting pitchers HAVE to stay healthy and Murton and Cedeno have to continue showing the success they had when they played last year.

Out of all the options, I guess I'll take Wilson in RF, but truth be told I'd rather save the money and just give it to Patterson. I think he could put up similar numbers.

Mr. Hendry - just don't sign Wilson to ANYTHING longer than a 1 year contract!!!

Wilson:

2003 .282/.343/.537 (600 AB)

2004 .248/.315/.391 (202 AB)

2005 .260/.325/.467 (520 AB)

Patterson:

2003 .298/.329/.511 (329 AB)

2004 .266/.320/.452 (631 AB)

2005 .215/.254/.348 (451 AB)

Patterson outproduced Wilson as recently as 2004 (when Wilson's home park was Coors Field). However, Wilson only had 202 AB that year due to injury. Corey was pretty close to Wilson in 2003. Wilson is five years older. As extremely pissed as I would be if Patterson was in RF to start 2006, I really don't see how Wilson is much of a better option. Corey would be a huge risk because of his 2005, of course. But it's also possible he could bounce back into the .270/.325/.470 range which is probably better (sadly) then what Wilson will provide.

You'd have to pass a referrendum against booing him. If you could do that I wouldnt be against it.

Word is that Urbina has asked another inmate - some guy named "Rojo" - for a poster of Rita Hayworth.

I wonder how many people actually still like Corey Patterson? 10-20?

Yes, I am one of those people. Play Corey in right in 2006. It seems to me like Wilson is just a righthanded version of Corey, so why not stick with Corey.

Cub fans are born with short memories....otherwise the pain would just be too much. If he gets off to a decent start and has even a mediocre year.....the fans will be fine with him. If he has a good/great year.....he will be the talk of the town and everyone will pretend that they knew it all along. The other options are not markedly better....give Corey a shot.

If there's a player that I watch and disappoints me less than Wilson, I have yet to see him. Physically, he's extremely gifted has great bat speed, power, etc.

His approach to the game is in the toilet, he lacks effort and instincts, and despite his skills, he can't overcome the fact he puts little effort into his game.

It would be a waste to bring him in.

Kinda sounds like Patterson no?

Maybe he just needs the right motivation and environment to maximize his gifts.

That excuse holds some weight with a 24 or 25 year old, not a guy who will be 32 this season.

I hope another team would try and take that chance, one that has the flexibility of not having their season dependent on Wilson.

In a very real way a lot of our team's success is going to depend on how good the RF is.

Wilson is acceptable if we land Tejada, or barely acceptable if we hold onto Walker. Wilson is not acceptable on his own. Unfortunatly, those here that thought Wilson and Pierre would be the big additions this offseason might be proven correct.

It'll dictate plenty for the Cubs, he'll likely be the 5th hitter hitting behind Ramirez and Lee, that's a lofty responsibility, Burnitz had that task and did not perform well. For most of the year, the hitter who came up to bat with the highest amount of runners on was Burnitz.

The Cubs' success will be depend on the health of our starting pitching staff....
