Carlos Lee To Cubs Deal Imminent

MLBTradeRumors has learned of a blockbuster deal that is expected to go down by the end of the day. Talks between Jim Hendry and Doug Melvin are in advanced stages of a rare interdivision trade.

The Cubs will send Matt Murton, Rich Hill, and Angel Guzman to the Brewers for slugger Carlos Lee. Lee will be a free agent after the 2006 season, and the Cubs intend to lock him up after finishing the Derrek Lee deal. According to my source, the Brewers view Lee's impending free agency as a distraction and desperately want to shed his $8.5MM salary.

Lee is expected to bat fourth between the other Lee, Derek, and Aramis Ramirez.

What do you think? Did the Cubs overpay to get the other Lee?

I wouldn't mind having Lee, but Murton, Hill, and Guzman is overpaying...

There's an understatement if I've ever heard one.

As for wanting Lee, I would've agreed with you a year ago. His 2005 left much to be desired, though.

This had better be someone's idea of April Fool's.

Did anybody NOTICE that they didn't quote a source...outside of itself? No heard it from a guy I know inside the Brewers or Cubs org, no quote from a newspaper writer for either city..nothing. 80% chances this is an April Fools' Joke.

A couple of questions you had to asked yourself:

1: Why would the Brewers trade their 2nd most valuable veteran hitter on the cusp of contending for the NL Central?

2: With an already underachieving bloated payroll, why would the Cubs trade three valuable CHEAP young players who could help the Cubs more then Carlos Lee would?

Neither question would be answer in this trade scenerio, so this deal doesn't make sense (I rather have Lee then Soriano), so I figure this deal is close to happening.

I'm sure it's fake. To answer your questions though...

1. The Brewers would do it because they would be robbing us. They get rid of a hig salary, add a productive young OF under team control for 5 years, add a potential #2 starter in Guzman, and also add Hill. They would be crazy to turn that down.

2. The Cubs could potentially justify this trade by saying we have a surpluss of young pitching arms. 9 starters for 5 spots in the rotation when everyone is healthy. They would also say Lee's experience and ability to drive in runs is a major improvement over Murton. (Note: I don't feel this way, but I could see Hendry feeling this way)

It's gotta be fake though. We would get completly robbed in that trade.

To be fair about your sig, Aramis Fan, the Cubs had nothing to do with Florida's signing Borowski as an FA this offseason.

To be fair about your response, ndistops, Aramis Fan was quoting someone else in his signature.

Well he did have 32 hr and 114 rbi last year so it wasn't that bad a of a year. Yeah he avg was down but he is a .284 career hitter.

I wouldnt be against a Murton and Hill deal for CLee....

To be honest, I don't blame him. If someone comes and flames "NSBB is garbage" on this board, we'd ban them too.

I'm not saying I'd do the deal. I really like Murton, and I'd just hate to part with him. And I'm not saying I believe the rumor. But is the deal really as absurd as people are making it out to be? Guzman has never been healthy, Murton is essentially a rookie, and Rich Hill is unproven. Carlos Lee has power and is capable of putting up a decent average and OBP.

I have some of the most pessimistic(for lack of a better word) projections for Murton, but he's a decent bet to put up similar numbers as Lee in the OBP department with superior defense. The fact that Lee is a more expensive rental, and that we're giving up 2 of our top pitching prospects that are on the cusp of the majors isn't worth the increase in power.

Agreed. People frequently comment about boards on other boards (like many of us complain about cubs.com or the ESPN boards here). However, when someone complains about a board on that board, it doesn't give a good impression. It makes one wonder why someone is even on a board if they don't think much of it.

Yeah, but Lee has that pop that we were looking for in the outfield.
