Its to the point where I just really hope he turns it around, I kinda feel bad for the guy for whatever reason.

I only feel bad for Patterson for the injury he suffered in 2003. Not just because how he could have helped the Cubs, but for his career in general. He was never the same. Other than that, I don't feel the least bit sorry for him. I just think that he was on his way to being a decent player in the league, and maybe someday he will be, but that injury affected him deeply. Who knows. Either way, he sucked in 2004 and 2005 and I didn't want him on the team anymore. But like I said, he was having an excellent year in 2003 before he got injured and that's why I feel bad for him. If he learns to take walks he will be a MUCH better player.

A quote from Corey from orioles.mlb.com:

Patterson hasn't been as successful in the batter's box, though, notching just one hit in his first 10 at-bats.

And it's not just the outs, but the way he's gotten out. Patterson has shown the tendency to swing at pitches early in the count in nearly all of his at-bats, but he doesn't see anything wrong with his approach or his execution. The former first-round pick thinks everything will work out, provided that he gets enough at-bats to take care of business.

"If it's there -- if I like it -- I swing at it. If I don't like it, I take it," he said. "I know I'm an aggressive hitter. The other teams know that too. That's just who I am, and you are who you are. What you want to do is get a ball that you like. It might be the first pitch. It might be the third pitch. It might be the sixth pitch.

Making the grade: When Markakis plays in center, that allows the Orioles to slide Newhan or Jeff Conine to left field. Perlozzo said the rookie has held his own in the first 10 games, leaving hope for the immediate future.

It just sounds like he's never going to make the necessary adjustments to improve. Hopefully something will click for him.

His hitting philosophy is fine, provided you can recognize pitches. From the guy who hasn't seen a high fastball he didn't like, it's the wrong philosophy.

I bet he still thinks he's a HR hitter, and that since Adam Dunn is free swinger and can still hit 40 HR's w/ a broken hand, K-Pee can too.

The problem with Patterson's philosophy can be found right in his own sentence. THE OTHER TEAM KNOWS you will swing early and often, therefore they are not going to groove one for you. Until he learns to layoff the pitchers pitch, he's not going to improve.

I hope someone eventually helps him figure this out.

Dunn isn't a free swinger.

If he plays long enough, he'll break Reggie Jackson's all time strikeout record.

Doesn't that record belong to Sosa now? I know he was nearing the record.

Nope. So-So was still 400 behind.

Is Sosa second on the all-time list?

Yeah. 2,194 K's

That hardly makes him a free swinger. He had the fifth highest pitches per plate appearance in the majors last year at 4.24.

Free swingers don't have .400 on-base percentages. Disciplined hitters don't have 150 strikeouts per year.

I would say Dunn is a, well, I don't know what you call it.

Dunn has only played 4.5 seasons and is already almost 1/3 of the way to Reggie's record. He'll definately have a shot if he doesn't get hurt but would need to average 150 a year for about 12 years to have a get the record. He'll definately shouldn't have problem getting into the top 10 or 20 though. He already has the single season strikeout record (altough Jose Hernandez would have it if his manager didn't sit him out the last week+ of the year). Personally, I would like to see Dunn go for 200 K's on the year. With 18 so far in 12 games that puts him on pace for 243 on the year. Let the Adam Dunn strikeout watch begin. In the three full seasons he has played his lowest single year total was 168.

When you have an OBP of 400, it really doesn't matter how many times you K.

People saying Patterson was bad in '04 is one my biggest pet peeves on this board.

Definitely wasn't. He had a terrible July, but in August he carried the Cubs. .336/.388/.605. Overall batted .266 with a .771 OPS. Not tearing up the world, but perfectly acceptable at CF.
