Absolutely wow. On his show he says that it should be announced anyday now.

EDIT: Makes mention that the Cubs brass are waiting for a good time to announce it.

This makes perfect sense -- corporations like stability and profits. The Cubs have plenty-o-profits, so no need to change the formula.....

can we possibly find a way to get macphail fired and then hendry fired before anything comes of this?

ps- please have every coach on the staff fired as well.

it's not that the trib is cheap, because they're really not, they're just not very good at this baseball business. if they really wanted to save money while putting a watchable product on the field, they'd hire PD (you know who), tell him to cut the payroll to 85-80 mil--and have him start drafting and developing the farm. this would actually make me very happy, plus it would cut payroll.

pss- gary hughes is satan and won't stop drafting athletes until he is removed, no matter how bad at baseball said athletes are. the worse they are the more resolve he has to prove those "moneyball" fellas wrong.

save money, hire depo.

I'm guessing that he's just spouting off the same "extension coming" info that the beat writers have been saying, and just putting a "listen to me" spin on it by saying "any day now".

I don't think there's anything new here.

1) how would stone know? i mean, i'm sure he still talks to people, but i would think even santo would be more 'in the know', and he was talking about a 'big change' on that offday last monday.

2) it wouldn't suprise me, that if the cubs sweep the marlins, which would make them 6-3 in their last nine(even though that would make them 5-1 against the 'fecal league' and 1-2 against an actual good ball club), that hendry would start going all over the radio with 'look, he's turned the club around, and derrek isn't back yet' and immediately given an extension.

i don't doubt it...

I listened to tall the talk today on WSCR and they were saying that Dusty will get an extension. Seriously, WHY? I can't think of ONE reason why. I wish my work world was like that... are you an underperformer? How about an extension. It's just so insane.

The mentioned it on PTI also and Wilbon said something along the lines of "the Cubs stink and what has Baker done to deserve an extention...nothing."

Why are you surprised? I told you a month ago that both would have extensions If they wanted it, 2 to 4 years. look for Dusty to get 2 more years. Stone isn't issuing a newsflash. He makes it sound like he's in the know, but that is just his self importance talking. He is one of the least respected men around baseball by the industry people.

Honestly I couldn't care less about the "industry people." Is Peter Gammons an industry person? I think Steve Stone will say what he wants to say and not worry about who he's offending, and most of the time he's right. Baseball insiders may not respect him for that, but I do.

After 30 plus years of following the Cubs, right now I'm laughing. Just when I think this club can't get any more inept, they top what I think. My best guess as to what happens after this.

1. Kerry Wood gets a two or three year guaranteed money extension. I mean really why would he go elsewhere? He's getting paid to rehab. Heck I'd go to the physical therapist day in and day out for a tenth of what he's making. For all that money he only has to pitch at most 5-10 times a year. Easy Money

2. Juan Pierre gets signed to a two or three year extension.

3. Larry Rothschild will get an extension as well

4. Mark Prior will catch the bird flu. I guarantee that. It will make the jump from human to human when Mark Prior shakes hands with an infected chicken farmer from Tennessee when he's rehabbing later this year.

There's really no use to get mad or angry about any of this stuff anymore. Just laugh, because we're the laughing stock of baseball. Everyone else has laughed at this joke of a ballclub for years, why shouldn't we get in on the fun.

Steve Stone, as well as Boers & Bernstein, think the extension is pretty much done with the Cubs just waiting for the right time to announce it.

They're waiting for the next 2 game winning streak which may happen around....2010.

perfect summary.

the trib sucks. :x

fwiw, the Marlins broadcasters have speaking as though the extension is already a done deal. Dusty may have been the right guy for 2003, but he's not even close to being the right guy for 2007. Disappointing move.

On the other hand, maybe he'll get the bird flu from Prior ...

Wouldn't the Tribune Co. have a higher profit if the Cubs weren't spending that much money on Dusty?
