The end is near people!

Dusty Baker and some of his coaching staff may have a restless All-Star break after general manager Jim Hendry announced Tuesday he will use the four-day break to decide whether an overhaul is in order.

Hendry declined to go into specifics, but Baker and coaches Gene Clines, Larry Rothschild, Gary Matthews and Juan Lopez could be dismissed as early as next week.

I'M SO SICK OF YOU QUESTIONING THE GM. I MAY NOT AGREE WITH EVERYTHING HE DOES, BUT HE'S OUR GM DAGNABIT!

Im happy about a new coaching staff, but I hope they'll have reasonable coaches to replace them.

Larry will be the scapegoat -- everyone else stays till the end of the year (at least).

Larry will then wonder why the heck he didn't take that Tigers job when he had the chance.

Thanks for posting this, now I can go to sleep peacefully with dreams of press conferences in my head. :D

I'm gonna have dreams of Barret punching them in the face. Then Lee tossing them up and hitting a practice home run with them. And then them screaming as the camera follows them and then they splatter into a million gushy peices. . And then the NSBB'ers flying around and peeing on their remains. .

. . . I have vivid dreams.

Praise Jebus.

Maybe we'll have a competent manager next year? It's hard to imagine...

PS. This post needs more rolleyes.

I don't believe a GM can make statements like that and not end up doing something. The writing is now firmly on the wall.

They will scapegoat the bullpen coach. Juan Lopez will be fired and the rest will remain.

Among the candidates Hendry is expected to put on his short list if he decides to replace Baker are former managers Lou Piniella, Tom Kelly, Jimy Williams and Gene Lamont, along with Braves coach Fredi Gonzalez, who interviewed for the job in '02 before Baker was hired. If Hendry decides to go with an interim manager for the second half, third-base coach Chris Speier and Triple-A Iowa manager Mike Quade are considered strong possibilities.

A few notes about the candidates listed...

Lou- Oh Kent, please no!

Tom Kelly- This would be hilarious because Todd Walker has publicly stated how much he hates him. Fun times would ensue. Walker blames Kelly for his reputation as a poor defender. Think Billy Martin-Reggie Jackson level of hatred here.

Jimy Williams- Jeez....please no!

Gene Lamont- Does always float to the top.

Fredi Gonzalez- Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes!

This article from Phil Rogers is even more definitive:

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060704rogers,1,2599839.column?coll=cs-home-headlines

The body of evidence is in, accumulated day by painful day during the team's 111-143 unraveling since the next-to-last weekend of the 2004 season, and time has run out on Baker. He has been just another manager without Barry Bonds (or even Sammy Sosa) in the dugout, and there are only two questions now: Will he last through this weekend's series in Milwaukee? And, more importantly, who replaces him?

And at least two references to OBP here as well...

They have a compelling trait of ranking annually near the top of their leagues in on-base percentage.
As a group, Shines' players walk; the ones playing for Baker in Chicago haven't, always finishing lower in league rankings in on-base percentage than batting average.

Could it be??????
