From Rotoworld:

Carlos Lee will likely be traded after rejecting a four-year, $48 million contract proposal from the Brewers, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Intentionally or not, Brewers GM Doug Melvin is playing this one smart. $48 million over four years is a fair offer for Lee, but it wasn't one he was going to accept, not when he seems likely to get $65 million for five years as a free agent. Now the Brewers can say they tried, all along knowing that they are better off trading him and spending the money elsewhere. Lee is 30 years old, has little defensive value and has never finished a season with a 900 OPS. He could easily be a $5 million-$6 million player by the third year of his next contract. The Twins, Tigers, Angels, Rangers, Cardinals, Dodgers and Astros are all expected to have interest in trading for him.

Is it pretty much a given that the Cubs will be the team to give him 5 years and $65 million? :x

I wouldn't bet on it. How many players in the Hendry era have received 5 year contracts (or longer)?

The Brewers are trading slugger Carlos Lee to the Rangers as part of a multi-player deal, ESPN's Keith Law has learned. The Brewers are sending Lee, Nelson Cruz and a player to be named to Texas for reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix. Both teams are working on the medicials.

Boy, this one came out of nowhere. This might help the Rangers win the division, but they aren't a serious contender for the World Series. My hope is that this will make it easier for us to sign C-Lee in the offseason!

He was willing to go five years to get Furcal. Luckily the Dodgers saved us on that one.

Furcal would have been a huge upgrade over Cedeno.

Cedeno is not 13m a year and has upside. Upgrade? Sure. But he hasn't been very good this year, certainly not worth his contract.

I think that is a good deal for the Brewer's too. They get some Major League talent in return that they can either use as trading chips or put into their lineup and they will free up the money they would have used to re sign Lee for what they desperately need ----- PITCHING.

Doug Melvin has done a pretty good job so far in his tenure as GM in Milwaukee, props to him. Too bad the Cubs can't hire a GM with a little foresight. He traded Richie Sexon and now has 11 players on his roster that can be traced back to that deal, and now has turned Scotty Pods into Carlos Lee, into three more players.

Hopefully someone saves us on CLee too. I just don't have much interest in giving a 5-year deal to a guy on the wrong side of 30 who is having his best year in his contract year.

with the Brewers supposedly in the running for Maddux, what does everyone think of Maddux for Clark and Mench? gives you OBP out of center and a right handed platoon with Jones in right.

then trade Pierre for a decent prospect or two.

this of course also assumes the Cubs aren't able to get a blue chipper from SD or LA for Maddux and that Maddux approves the move up north.

I was just thinking about a Maddux for Mench trade

Brewers have been stuggling as of late. I think they might see themselves as sellers now. Don't know if they are still looking to add at this point.

I don't think Maddux would accept a trade to the Brewers, as tempting as it may be to join his brother. Maddux, if traded, will go to a contender where he will have a shot to win a W.S.

I'm not so sure they're selling, more that they wanted to get ML talent for Lee because they realized he'd probably walk. As for Maddux for Mench, I would think that would cripple their offense considerably by losing Lee. Nix is not good.

I suppose they would be squeezing the weenie baloon by making that deal. without the Lee or Mench/Clark they don't have the offense.
