On the Fox pre-game show for the Yankees game today, Ken Rosenthal said that the Cubs might be looking at Bruce Bochy from San Diego. I don't know much about Bochy, but it falls in with the theory some on the board have that Hendry might be waiting on someone as manager that is currently employed and not available for interview.

Rosenthal also said that Torre might get fired in the Yankees get eliminated today, and that Piniella would be the top name on George's list.

Just chruning the rumormill.

As per Ken Rosenthal on the Yankees-Detroit pre-game.

First time I've heard his name mentioned in the press.

Meh. He's better than some options. Worse than others.

So your saying he's better than Lou? lol that may not be saying much but its still possitive.

Someone want to throw out some info on him, I know absolutely nothing about him or what his managing philosophy would be.

He has a big head.

Bochy is known for having one of the largest cap sizes in Major League Baseball. When he joined the Padres in 1982, they did not have a batting helmet that would fit him, and they had to send the ones he was using in the minors.

I'm no expert on Bochy, but wasn't it reported he wants to hit Giles leadoff next year? I guess he at least recognizes the importance of OBP in the top spots in the lineup and that you don't have to be fast to hit first, if I am right about that report.

Please no Kevin Mench in LF.

Please let the Yankees hire Piniella.

I would have to think Girardi would be ahead of Lou in the wish list. But if the organization fires Torre, then obviously they don't think like me. The only reason I could think to fire Torre instead of letting him leave whenever he wants is that right now there is a manager on the market that the Yanks desperately want and if that manager is picked up by another team and Torre retires in a year or two they wouldn't be able to get him.

IMO, Bochy is probably the best fit for this team of all the possible candidates. I've never heard of him overworking his pitchers, and while he might not prefer younger players, I don't think you're going to find many mangers who do like young players. He doesn't seem as against them as Dusty, which is all that matters.

Bochy has a reputation for not playing the kids and a being a player's manager.

Next.

If there is only hope for this team, it is our kids.

Rich Hill

Matt Murton

Sean Marshall

Carlos Marmol

Pie, Gallagher, and Veal down the road.

but at the same time now that I think about it, a bunch of young guys have had chances to develop down there.

Probably the best name I've heard mentioned yet.

I'd still rather have Dierker or Francona...(I can dream, right?)

So Dusty 2.0?

No, not really. He seems to value OBP at least a little, doesn't care for bunting that much, etc. From what I have gathered, he is a bit more willing to play kids than Dusty was.

I lived in SD for six years, and Bochy was manager during that entire run so I saw a lot of him. I think he's a pretty solid guy - universally respected in the clubhouse, but not a soft touch like Dusty. He never struck me a guy who can easily be pigeonholed as "old school" or "new school" - he bunts occasionally, plays for the big inning sometimes, and generally seems to defy easy characterization. He also tends not to overwork his starters, occasionally to the point where he's been accused of having a quick hook.

On balance, I like Boch. Girardi is my first choice, but I'd be happy with Bochy.

You rang? :D

I think Bochy would be a solid choice. Bochy has sort of worn out his welcome in San Diego in regards to the fans, but one has to remember that San Diego plays as a small market team, and he's done fairly well with what he's had to work with. World Series in '98. Back to back division championships. I honestly felt San Diego had no shot at a playoff run this year, but they made it.

I disagree with the premise that Bochy doesn't like the rookies. Josh Barfield was handed the everyday job at the beginning of the season and Bochy didn't look back. He did the same thing with Kahlil Greene when he came up. He also didn't hesitate to go to Adrian Gonzalez at 1b. I believe San Diego is Adrian's third organization, and the one that actually gave him a chance. Ben Johnson got some significant playing time. Mike Darr was given a big opportunity, though he died tragically in a car accident.

I think the guys he doesn't give much of a chance to are guys that were pretty much a longshot to make it in the first place. Adam Eaton and Jake Peavy were promoted through the organization. Tim Stauffer didn't make the best of his opportunity last year.

I mentioned Ben Johnson earlier. I think they'd like to play Ben Johnson everyday, or at least get a regular platoon going with him, but Dave Roberts is their best lead off option, and I can't disagree with Boch's decision to go with Roberts.

Boch does like OBP. I heard the rumor about Giles batting lead off as well, and with Giles' SLG sliding as much as it has, I think it would be a brilliant move.

I haven't heard much regarding the pitcher abuse. My impression is that he doesn't abuse his starters. He may have overworked Linebrink in the bullpen a bit, however.

Boch has been here a long time. The Padres don't have any World Series rings, therefore the fans are not satisfied with the results. Personally, I don't think Padres ownership has given Bochy enough to work with to really win a World Series.

He definitely doesn't go for shenanigans. He really lets a guy have it for loafing. He also doesn't beat around the bush or shift blame.

I'd prefer Bochy over all others mentioned.

I agree with BBB on this - Bochy is a superior choice to any of the other candidates. He has shown his affinity for OBP, and has in fact played young guys to the exclusion of vets. I don't know why people would think otherwise considering Greene, Barfield, Gonzalez, and several picthers have all grown up on his watch.

Boch has been pretty careful with his starters generally, Peavy being no exception. If anyone should be worried, its the bullpen horses he rides like rented mules occasionally. Still - I'd hire him.

Starters are a more vaulable commodity. Fact is very few teams

have the perfect balance of IP b/t both starters and relievers.

If I am gonna burn out one, I'll chose the pen(outside of the closer role if he is a stud)

Yeah Bochy really didn't have any rookies to play until this year. Adrian Gonzalez, Cla Meridith, and Josh Barfield have seen a good deal of time. Gonzalez was a star in the waiting. In florida he had D Lee/hee sop choi/Delgado (I cant remember when he was traded) and then in Texas he had Texiera. He was a legit power guy though but playing the wrong position for those systems. The padres basically have one of the worst systems in the majors and aside from barfield they have traded to get all their young guys. But anyways he'll play the young guys.

WHen stone was in the booth I remember him having all sorts of man love for Bochy. He loved the fact that he stressed fundementals and that he kept getting the Padres to the playoffs despite lackluster talent.
