The Cubs changed their minds on Mark Prior Monday, penciling him into the starting rotation for the fifth Cactus League game of the season.

On Sunday, manager Lou Piniella said Prior wouldn't pitch the first "five or six" games as a precautionary measure. Since Prior's health problems have been a part of spring training since 2004, some interpreted that as an indication that Prior has not regained his arm strength, despite Piniella's plea to not "jump to any conclusions."

Story is up on dailyherald.com, too. We are no longer ceding the territory of breaking news to mlb.com.

Hooray! It's nice to know we can check in for breaking news now, too.

That's good news for all.

Indeed!

Finally..It seems like Prior is a little messed up mentally, like hes really worried about getting hurt again after being on the DL so long.Well I hope he returns and gets his confidence back.

I don't think so. Prior said he didn't know Piniella had planned to push his start back. He claims he's ready.

“I found out this morning, so that’s good,” said Prior, who made only 9 starts last year. “They said, ‘How do you feel?’ I said, ‘I feel good; I’m ready to go.’ They said, ‘All right, throw a B.P. (batting practice) Wednesday and shoot for, probably, Monday.’ Everything’s fine.”

Bruce, don't you have to love Lou for penciling in Rich Hill to start Sunday against AJ and the White Sox on TV?

I wonder how much the reaction in Chicago to the initial decision contributed to them changing the schedule.

I bet it had some influence. Piniella is trying to keep his camp positive so all the chatter/news here in Chicago probably got back to him (or he read it himself online) which, in turn, prompted his discussion with Prior today. Either way I'm happy.

It had everything to do with it. If the question is brought up, ofcourse someone like JH will say. Naw Naw, we at first were gonna hold him back but then Prior came in and said he felt good. So we just changed our minds. But the reality of it is, it had everything to do with how the media reacted. .

Yeah, that's good stuff. I think all the players are ready for games to begin. I know I am.

I would certainly hope that the team would do things in the manner they think is best for the progression and improvement of this team with no regard as to what the chatter is in the media. The media should not have any impact on how the team is handled in spring ball.

I agree but if he really is OK there's no reason to have a week of negative press if it can be avoided (especially considering the last few offseasons).

A bench clearing brawl in ST should set the tone for Lou's first season in Chicago.

It'd be pretty troubling and discouraging if the ballclub was letting the media's reaction dictate decisions such as this. We're in a lot of trouble if they've devolved into making the popular choice over the smart one.

Totally agree. I don't think it was central but I do believe it played a part because if Prior's healthy why take the heat all week (not to mention stressing us all out)?

I think this had everything to do with seeing how Prior felt after his session yesterday before committing to a date for his first game. They played it cautiously at first, then when he came in and felt fine today after throwing yesterday, they went forward. The last thing they wanted was to commit to a date then have to push it off if he felt a bit sore.

No need to see a conspiracy when there's such a simple explanation available.
