La Russa arrested on drunk-driving charge

By Joe Strauss and Derrick Goold

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

03/22/2007

JUPITER, Fla. -– Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was jailed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department early this morning on a charge of suspicion of driving under the influence, according to a police report obtained by the Post-Dispatch.

La Russa, 62, was booked at 4:07 a.m. local time after Jupiter police conducted the traffic stop.

The arrest potentially represents La Russa’s first offense, according to the report.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff placed the report on-line before most players had arrived at the team’s spring training complex. La Russa typically arrives at Roger Dean Stadium around 7 a.m.

A release from the Jupiter Police Department said the traffic stop had happened around midnight. The police report said he had been given a field sobriety test that showed La Russa’s blood alcohol level was 0.093. Florida law considers 0.080 driving under the influence. He game two breath samples at Palm Beach County Jail before being book.

The charge is a misdemeanor, and La Russa posted a $500 bond. But he was required to spend eight hours in custody before being released. He was expected to be released between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Florida time, Palm Beach County Sheriff spokesman Paul Miller said.

La Russa was found inside his stalled dark blue Escalade SUV at Frederick Small Blvd and Military Trail, about 15 miles from the stadium and less than a mile from the manager’s spring residence, the release from Jupiter police said.

La Russa was found asleep behind the wheel with his foot on the vehicle’s brake pedal. When an undercover officer told him to put the car in park, the Cardinals manager complied, according to a release.

A report filed by Jupiter police said that the Cardinals manager was breathing but that initial attempts to rouse La Russa by "repeated knocks on the window" on the driver’s side window had failed.

.093 used to be legal.

It's a first offense.

Eh -- yeah it's disappointing, but I don't think the Cards should make Holy Hay over it

Asleep at the wheel at that BCA? It's a combination of either fatigue or medication with a couple of beers. Not defending the choice, but it's more an unfortunate incident than what it will be made out to be.

Inexcusable, but not enough to justify taring and feathering him.

Agreed.

His mug shot doesn't look that bad actually. He looks better than he normally does.

I had heard during his years in Chicago that he had a drinking problem, not on Billy Martin's level, but still.

DUI is nothing to joke about. A 62 year old man should know better. Tony could of killed someone.

....which is probably why he pulled over.

Yes, it's a bad thing. Maybe Tony should visit a clinic or something.

if he had pulled over for that reason you would think he would have put the car in park. .093 is not trivial - there is a reason the limit is what it is.

I find it rather disturbing and disgusting how quick people are to blow off such a "low" level of BAC.

DUI is DUI. People die from it everyday. Just because you think you can handle it and that low numbers aren't that bad doesn't make it true.

I never said what he did was trivial.

.092?

How blown out of proportion is this gonna get?

Ask someone who has had a friend or relative killed by a drunk driver. They may disagree with your premise that driving a little over the drunk limit is not a big deal.

The courts will take it into account. If he had been .25, it would have definitely been worse for him.

How does that justify pretending this isn't a big deal? DUI is DUI. He's lucky he didn't kill anybody. Obviously he was in no shape to drive.

people die from many things everyday. this turned out fine for everybody except for a fine and loss of licnese, LaRussa should undoubtably be fine and everyone else can breathe

He'll go to rehab for the public and continue to sip on the sauce in Private or at his local pub. I'm sure next time he'll take a taxi. All is well....
