What the hell...

Mark Buehrle still gets heat for wearing a St. Louis Cardinals cap at a World Series game last October, but Carlos Zambrano one-upped Buehrle before Thursday's Cubs game.

Zambrano motioned to reporters standing around the clubhouse and pointed to a box that contained a pair of red shinguards.

"It's a gift from my next catcher, Yadier," Zambrano said.

Zambrano was referring to St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina, although he didn't specify whether he was going to St. Louis or Molina was coming to the Cubs.

I'm sure the Cardinals are willing to spend $100M+ for Zambrano.

Even if they were, Omar Minaya will offer Z more than Walt Jocketty has ever seen if Z hits the market.

It is the Cubs or the Mets for Z after this season. I would say the Yankees, but Z likes to hit too much, IMO, and the Mets would make a comparable offer.

The biggest mystery here is why the reporter who got this quote didn't get more info.

It's Paul Sullivan. The next time he does in-depth reporting on the Cubs will be the first time he does in-depth reporting on the Cubs.

z was probably trying to make a joke that made sense only to him

Exactly. The fact that Paul Sullivan reported this trash tells me all I need to know. Z does have a weird sense of humor, though.

He could be showing his unhappiness that the team didn't get his contract done and won't sign him now due to the pending sale. It may be his attempt to threaten the Cubs by insinuating he'd go to our biggest rival, kind of like Clemens with Boston/NY a while back. It won't work of course, since the Cubs don't really play one upsmanship with the Cardinals the way Boston and NY do. Still, one can see why he'd make the attempt.

The other and more likely possibility is that he was joking and the reporter took it way too seriously.

Exactly, the is pure Paul "Drama Queen" Sullivan.

Stir it up, Paul. Stir it up.

Listening to ESPN 1000 tonight, they were saying Paul Sullivan did a crappy job of reporting this (shock!) and that Z was just kidding around.
