Any interest? He still has upside and might come fairly cheap.

According to a Major League source, Wily Mo Pena has cleared waivers, allowing the Red Sox to trade him up until the Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline.

Just in case you were wondering, this has no bearing on the ability of the Red Sox to send Pena to the minors. These waivers are “trade waivers” which a team can pull a player back. In order to send Pena, who is out of options, down to the minors he would have to be placed on outright waivers.

Checked his '07 splits against LHPs and he's putting up this line so far:

.281/.352/.453 (.805 OPS)

His 3-year split ('04 - '06) vs. LHPs is:

.283/.353/.497 (.850 OPS)

Hendry should jump on him, and anyone else with the slightest amount of power.

He's only slugging .388 this year. Still, if he could be had on the cheap I'd be fine with bringing him in. I don't think he is any better than Floyd at this point though.

A lot of cliches come to mind... raw talent, change of scenery, yada yada. Also beggars cannot be choosers.

This team needs to boost its SLG somehow. Hopefully Jim is all over this.

How in the heck does he clear waivers? No team wanted to take the risk that the Red Sox would just give him away?

Not sure -- seems very odd since he's only owed ~$500K for the rest of this season and I assume he could be non-tendered if a team decided they didn't want him on their roster in '08. Seems like a no-risk waiver claim to me too. Maybe there are more gentleman's agreements going on between GMs than we or the media ever hear about.

He was the main part of the propsed Jermain Dye deal at the dealine, but it fell apart. Hes been horrible this season, however, when with Cincy, he was a notorious Cub killer, and basically homered every time he stepped foot in Wrigley.

.304/.407/.652/1.060 <--- Pena's career line at Wrigley. That goes with 4 homers and 9 RBIs.

Exactly why we won't get him. The Red Sox won't trade him unless they get major league talent in return. Who could we trade for him?

Hes been horrible, but hasn't been put in a situation to succeed at all. To Windy's point, it must be that the BoSox let it be known around the league that Wily Mo wouldn't be had for cheap / gentleman's agreement.

might as well see what they want for him. if he's cheap, i'd probably do it. they're not going to give murton a shot anyway. I hate to get multiple platoons going, but if desperate, platoon Pena/Jones in RF; Murton/Floyd in LF with Pie in CF.

Not happening, I realize, just throwing it out there as something I'd consider.

I bet the combined distance of those 4 homers was 1600-1700 feet. The guy absolutely crushed the ones I saw.

One additional quick thought, and I know this is completely wishful lightning in a bottle thinking, but this reminds me a little of Gary Gaetti in '98. The Cubs picked him up off the scrap heap in mid-August (I think he was DFA'd by the Cardinals), and he proceeds to put up about a 1000 OPS for the rest of the year.

BoSox's Murton maybe?

Basically, although at least Murton's been able to get consistant playing time in Iowa. Poor Wily Mo is out of options.

wow, I knew Gaetti was great for us in '98, but I didn't know he actually put up a .991 OPS. Too bad we re-signed him and he had a brutal '99.

Funny...I was just having a Gary Gaetti conversation with a Cardinal fan co-worker at lunch.

Trade him for a PTBNL, then just call Dave Littlefield and tell him to send whoever the PTBNL from the Izturis trade to Boston instead of Chicago.
