I was at the game tonight and I'm assuming it was blatantly obvious how many people were booing him during the seventh inning stretch tonight. I personally didn't participate in it, but I wasn't about to cheer him when we're fighting with the Brewers either (despite my love of his role in the Major League series).

I was just wondering what you guys thought about the booing tonight. Justified? Classless? What?

P.S. - Not sure if it was shown tonight, but everybody in the stands sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame tonight after Mr. Uecker had finished his set. That on it's own was pretty cool.

Maybe you missed it or didn't hear it, but his rendition went like this:

Let me root, root, root for the Brewers

That should explain it.

And he followed it with "and you all root for the cubs, or something along those lines. I thought it was cool. I even thought it was cool when Jack Buck stopped mid-song "root root for the" ripped off his Cubs hat, threw it away and put on a Cards hat and said the Cardinals!

I didn't hear it on the broadcast Rob, but they Uecker did make mention during the bottom half about the fans re-singing it after he was done.

I was sad to see the fans react like that. Uecker's been nothing but classy when he sings and I hope to have him do it every year until he's retired. He's one of the games best broadcasters.

I thought it was a little much to boo him before he even started singing, and I was disappointed to hear it. I was listening to the mlb.radio feed, so I heard the fans sing it again on their own and thought that was pretty cool.

If the fans would have cheered him at the beginning and just booed him at the Brewers part of his rendition, I think that would have been better and much more along the lines of friendly banter, but I also can't really blame the fans for taking the competition to the point of being unwelcoming to Uecker.

If either the Brewers or the Cubs were out of the race, then this game means nothing and I highly doubt the fans give the same reaction - it was solely a product of the magnitude of the series. So while I'm disappointed that they booed him so much, I don't think it was a terrible thing.

I really like Bob Uecker alot. He isnt the funniest man ever, but he is funny but still knows theres a game on. That being said we are in a pennant chase with his team. Its time to throw off the Lovable Loser and boo the opposition sometimes.

I love Uek and was disappointed that he got booed last night.

One thing that distinguishes most Cubs fans from people in St Louis, NY, and Boston is that we are friendly and welcoming when opposition fans visit Wrigley. Its something my Dad taught me when I was 4 and he started taking me to games; season tix 6 rows behind the visiting on-deck circle. Some of our best convos and most enjoyable games were with Philly fans, Cards fans, etc.

I hope that attitude isn't changing.

Well, Uecker has been doing it that way for years. I think it's a great way for him to handle it. However, given the race we're in, I don't think it was bad for the fans to boo him.

I love Uecker and he's a great ambassador for baseball, but maybe from now on the Cubs should only ask people willing to do say "Cubbies!" to sing.

The booing makes no sense - what was he supposed to say? "root for the Cubbies"??? Then he becomes disloyal to the Brewers... his "I'll root for the Brewers, you do the same for the Cubs" is perfectly fine and very classy IMO. And like Vance said, the fact that there is a race going on didn't help either.

I love Ueker. I don't think the booing was a big deal. I think it seemed like pretty light-hearted booing (if there is such a thing). He didn't seemed bothered by it after ward and mentioned that it was likely because of the division race going on.

yeah, i was a little disappointed in the booing. i generally don't boo at most sporting events (unless the other team is a big rival or something). i mean, how classy is it for, say, 100,000+ people at a Penn State game to boo the visiting school's MARCHING BAND? lame

Wow, kinda surprised at the responses here.

Bob Uecker is one of the biggest jerks in sports that I have ever met.

Ann Ladd may agree with you.

Haha, yeah. Well my incident wasn't quite as serious. I just remember being about 14 years old or so and Uecker refusing to sign autographs for little kids and just really being kinda mean.

No big deal I guess, I just thought it was odd that an announcer couldn't take 2 minutes for the 5 people who knew who he was. Maybe it was a bad day.

I am surprised too. Why are we bowing down to Uecker? I blame the Cubs for asking him. This is a tribute to Harry and cub fans and if someone doesn't want to say Cubbies, don't allow them.

However, this is a Comcast set up deal.

I think it's silly to have other broadcasters sing the 7th inning stretch. Of course that's going to be the reaction...especially when the game means something. Short of eliminating the guest conductors, they should at the very least not allow opposing team representatives to sing the stretch. Let them throw out a first pitch or something like that.

Interesting. That's almost opposite the experience that I had, in terms of his attitude. Though I didn't ask him for an autograph (not really my thing, I have like two of them, one being of Scott Servais (lol)), he was rather engaging and took time out to talk to me.

Too bad about your experience, I wonder which of ours is more emblematic of his attitude overall.

Or have them in the booth but let Ronny or Len sing the stretch.

As most of you know, I have quite a collection of autographs. I think it is sometimes hard to determine the personality of the player or announcer in this case from just one encounter. I've seen guys blow off three people one day and then stop and sign for twenty the next all the while being engaging and personable. Of course, I've encountered the ones who seem to always come off as onery and mean, but I think like everyone, they have good days and bad.

Why the heck is everyone making a big deal about this? So we boo'ed the opposing team's broadcaster in jest. What the hell are we supposed to do when they bring the opposing team's broadcaster in to sing "TMOTTB"? It was all in good fun. This is nothing like booing Kendall during his first game as a Cub, this is completely different. Not a big deal, not embarassing, in fact it says nothing bad about our fan base at all.

Who's "bowing down" to Ueker?

I agree, but I don't think having Uek sing the stretch is same thing as say having Mike Krukow sing the stretch. Uek transcends the booth and is a beloved personality well beyond it, particulalry to people who grew up during the 80's and feel that Major League is one of the three greatest sports movies ever made (like me).
