I think one of the things we have to worry about is Dusty falling in love with Eyre/Howry and wearing them out by August. I hope he doesn't.

As the starters get stretched out and hopefully start going longer into games, Dusty will be able to mix and match with Ohman/Eyre and Williamson/Howry in order to get to Dempster.

It's now been 8 days since Wuertz got game action.

Now was not the game to use him though.

Probably, but today wasn't the only opportunity he had to use Wuertz.

Yeah, yesterday would have worked.

I'm a big anti-Dustyite but I will admit he's been a lot less stupid this year, although it's only 4 games. Neifi has only started once so far, which I didn't expect. Last year was an endless parade of dumb moves by Dusty, so this is refreshing. Hope it lasts.

Chalk this win up for Dusty and Barrett. Props to Dusty, he deserves it for this win.

thanks, I'll chalk up to Zambrano, Barrett and Lee.

I'd like to win. This isn't Little League where we play everyone.

Good job today by Dusty. Actually, I thought his substitutions all year have been good/great. His lineups have been pretty decent as well. Even Neifi in the 2 hole worked out ok.

That was a good call by Dusty. Neifi has good numbers against the pitcher and had a bunch of hits. Now if he will just play Pagan in RF if Jones is sumping terribly 2 months into the season. To pinchhit Maybry a few days ago was a great call also. I guess Dusty knows he might get a contract extension so he is actualyl managing wiht his head screwed on. But folks it is early.

I don't weurtz in the game right now in crucial division games that are close.

I've had little to no objection as to how Dusty has used the pen through 5 games, other than pitching eyre 37. But even then we had a day off the next day.

Not trying to start anything or say it was not a good move, but it is really easy to call any move that ends up being a pinch hit home run a good move, whether it was actually a good move or not.

It's his contract year, is it not?

As Charley Finley once said "Give me 25 players in their contract year, and I'll win you the World Series."

Are you really going to nit-pick him about the team's worst pitcher? Can't we be happy that the team is off to a good start and Dusty has managed decent enough? Geez.

well, if he isn't going to use him, send him to AAA to sort himself out and bring up another hitter.

Fine with me, but the thread's topic was intended to address how we are pleasently surprised by Dusty's competence thus far, and we get "but he doesn't use Wuertz". That's incredibley nit-picky in light of Wuertz's role on this team.

Wuertz isn't the team's worst pitcher. In fact, if we let him pitch he may be our best or second best reliever that we have for cheap for a long time, which is part of the frustration. Secondly, for a long time now we've been going with a 12 man staff, and continually have had someone that goes extended periods of time without use, and then doesn't do well when they do pitch. Wuertz appears to be that guy this year, which really isn't deserved considering his abilities and past performance. Add in that the other pitchers in similar roles(Williamson and Howry) have a combined 6 outings in 4 days, and it illustrates that Wuertz is getting ignored.

Finally, I didn't post this just to find something that was wrong with Baker to complain about. I've mentioned it in several game threads, talked about it in today's flashchat, etc. It really bugs me that we're setting up a talented reliever to fail. My purpose wasn't to try to ignore what Dusty's done well, but rather to put the topic out there since there hasn't been much discussion about it. This happened to be the first thread after the game where it was applicable.
