I have to give the Cubs and even (gulp) Dusty a lot of credit for a very exciting first week of baseball. There were many positives, including:

- Murton and Cedeno started every game

- Neifi started just once (in a platoon against a lefty)

- Neifi was not the di facto first guy off the bench in pinch hitting situations

- The Cubs drew a lot of walks (17) for a team OBP of .366

- The team has shown power from many positions.

- Dusty has done very little tinkering with the lineup, and when he has (Neifi in at 2nd, Barrett moved up to 5th) the results have been positive.

- Bullpen ERA is 1.45

- Team already has 6 pinch hits in 5 games including 2 HR.

There are certainly some bad points (giving up too many walks, Rusch's start, etc.) but I want to stay positive. Great games so far and I hope it keeps up.

Dempster's change looks for real.

Murton's defense. 2 great catches and one great throw to get that DP.

Cedeno. The start we all prayed for. .556!

Depth. Much better than last year.

THE SWEEP.

...that we are getting positive reports on Wood, Prior and Miller.

Through five games, the CUBS are seeing 3.73 P/PA (which is right on league average from last year) as opposed to their 3.61 from last year.

I loved seeing Isringhausen come in with zero control, and CUBS hitters actually taking pitches. Who are these guys ????

They must be the same imposters that took four straight walks after two outs in the first in the Spring Training game I went to in March.

We're on a pace to draw 551 walks this year...... compared to last year's league average of 525 and our miserable total of 419.

God, I love spring time !!!

I'm really impressed with Dusty. Starting Murton and Cedeno every game has been great. Murton has struggled with the bat since opening day, Cedeno has had his issues with the glove.

Dusty has had a perfect week to me. He's made perfect substitutions with pinch hitters, defensive replacements, and the bullpen. The only possible complaints could be Eyre's 37 pitches, and Dusty has allowed him to rest properly from that. And pulling Marshall a batter too early, and I don't think the result would have been any different.

Hopefully, this is one of the years where everything goes right.

I too am impressed with Dusty's managing so far. It's going to take more than one week to fully convince me, but maybe you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

Hmm. How far can we take this "New Dusty" idea? Maybe if we can convince Dusty he's the "New Dusty", he'll take the ball and run with it.

It just proves that when you win people are happy. I think Baker has done a decent job so far but I would like to see Perez at the bottom of the order when he starts and Weurtz to have pitched a little more than yesterday thus helping keep the other releivers more fresh. Hopefully Baker will have more confidence in the whole staff to be able to keep them all involved.

I LOVE our bullpen. I've been complaining about that for years.

BTW I just saw another highlight of Barrett's Grand Slam and I stood up and put my hands in the air again.

well..... maybe the number of walks, eh?

Posted

1 ) Cedeno is leading the league in batting average! He's en el fuego amigos! Ronnie is making us very happy that the Dodgers landed Furcal and that we didn't give up the farm for Lugo.

2 ) Murton's defense. Oh, how I loved the throw he made to 1B for the double play. How bout the leaping grab in the 1st inning at Cinci? And then there was the catch in the 9th last night. Murton is a joy to watch play. I like his walks too!

3 ) Derick Lee is doing just what he did last year. Three home runs already! If there was any doubt he would repeat his exceptional year, they are quickly going away.

4) Maddux looked very good in his first outing. Would love to see Greg with 16-18 wins and a 3.30 - 3.50 ERA this year. Likely? Probably not. Possible? Certainly!

5) Pie is tearing it up in AAA! Guzman hasn't allowed an earned run yet...oh, and EPatt has started hot....not to mention Gallagher...

6) Barrett is starting to run away from the pack of NL catchers. Ladies and Gents, your All star catcher...

7) How bout that bullpen?! How bout them apples boyeeeee!

8 ) Aramis is healthy. Aramis healthy = monster year.

9) Todd Walker's playing.

10) We're 4-1 without Prior and Wood (and Miller). When they come back...and they WILL come back...watch out!

unfortuately stupid fans will vote a guy like Piazza or LoDuca as the starter regardless of Barret's numbers

I hear ya, but don't underestimate the voting block of cubs fans. Last year we were able to pull Lee ahead of Pujols for 1B when Lee had better numbers. This year, Barrett is our man (in addition to Lee again of course...and Ramirez...and Cedeno at this rate)!
