Haven't seen this posted anywhere else, and this seems the appropriate place to talk about it:

Apparently, the Italian league are having talks with MLB about setting up a fully professional league in Italy by 2009. The whole thing seems to be rather preliminary at the moment (i.e. a business plan is being made), but the idea of having a pro-ball outpost in Europe sure sounds intriguing.

For those who want to have a go, you can about it on the Italian league's website: Fraccari annuncia il professionismo per il 2009

With my limited understanding of Italian, it seems that there's also talk of the construction of a 'MLB worthy' stadium in Rome (whatever that may mean), and the Italian league's academy in Tirrenia being transformed in to a permanent facility of the MLB academy next year.
