We should've kept Walker. The compensation when he left would be better than the garbage we received for him.

Maddux, too.

Maddux - Type A

I didn't see that one coming. Of course, offering Maddux arbitration would have been to risky a decision.

Ceda is close enough to the equivalent of a first round pick, imo, given his stuff and age.

Maddux definitely, but Ceda is more than garbage.

EDIT: On a different note, Blanco is a Type C.

Blanco wouldn't matter anyway. A team has already received compensation for him leaving as a free agent, so I don't believe the Cubs would have been eligible to receive any even if he had been classified as type A.

Pierre had averaged over 200 hits the last 4 years. Kind of surprising, although I guess we really don't know what stats they use to evaluate a player. One thing is for sure, power must valuable in the rankings.

So we recieve a sandwich pick if we offer arbitration?

Kenny Lofton was ranked 6.3 points higher than Pierre, and Lofton doesn't have any more power than Pierre at this point in his career. Maybe career numbers come into play.

Lofton's had substantially better stats than Pierre these past two seasons. For that matter, so has Todd.

I would agree, but I thought the general consensus/educated guess was that these rankings were based off of more traditional stats like BA, Hits, SBs, HR, RBI... In this Pierre is pretty good.

its based off two years for those wondering about pierre.

I'd guess this is bad news for Walker's agent. No team is going to give up a top pick to sign him. Looks like a minor league deal for Todd.

Have the rules changed? I thought the Padres had to first offer arbitration for the draft pick situation to even matter?

You are correct.

Thanks.

So Walker being a Type A free agent will not play a role in his next contract unless the Padres offer him arbitration.

And if they offer him arby, he most certainly won't be stuck with a minor league deal.
