Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Watkins was simply being used as an example of a struggle-then-finish-stronger guy. That profile also applied to Caratini, who needed a stronger finish to get his OPS up, but still only to a still-meager .714, with a still light-hitting 4 HR, and a still light-hitting .372 slugging. (Heh heh, this i...

Re: 2015-16 International Free Agency Thread

To belabor my standard precaution: hitting mid-90's in a showcase isn't inherently very impressive. If you can't, it's a bad sign, but if you can, it doesn't prove a ton. 1. Full-season minor-leaguers are pitching every 5th day and getting tired; showcase guys can be building up and resting all gear...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

I'm personally rather uncertain on Caratini. Defensively, the arm is solid, I get that. And the receiving seems to scout as if his upside is to become average/OK. So, it would seem he's got the physical tools to be average/OK/decent as a catcher, given time/work/polish. But I've heard very little ab...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

McLeod and Madison etc. all value progress; the 2nd half performance is considered to be most relevant. From that view, Almora and Caratini finished strong, as did Underwood. Did Almora and Caratini make some adjustments so that they are better players now, and the improved late-season players are w...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Caratini is his own prospect, every guy is. I think a Watkins analogy is that he was a 2nd-level prospect who would struggle at a level; show 2nd-half production; get some post-season interest; then struggle again the following season before a 2nd-half bounce back. The routine was start slow, finish...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

1. I don't care very much about the sequencing. What I care about, as Tom noted, is what the scouting insights are. As Tom noted, if the scouting eval on Contreras is insightful or informative, that's what matters to me, not whether he's #2 or #9. 2. On my personal list, I had Vogelbach at #40. (Whe...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Interesting list, and some interesting perspectives based on quick skim. I'm no scout, so don't know how to evaluate scouts or players very well. I wonder how many views he gets on guys to shape his report? His Zastryzny report almost sounds like it's largely based on one AFL game (when "good&q...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Add Dewees as perhaps also an outside possibility in the CF future. Arm is weak, but it's better than Pierre. We'd like perfect players everywhere, of course, so I don't want a weak-armed CF. But often you end up choosing between guys with flaws. *IF* he has true CF range, and *IF* he hits well, and...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Wilson turns 20 in October. I wonder if he'll just one-step it, and do Eugene this summer? Or if he might perhaps be a fast-track guy who'd jump straight to South Bend? EJ Martinez is 20. I also wonder where he'll start. I'd guess they'd be pretty careful/slow with him, likely keep him initially und...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Thanks, Dave, that's really interesting. Some thoughts: 1. I'd think this kind of thing would take a while to become useful. The quality of the programming and the relevance of the results, not easy or quick to scientifically confirm. 2. If this was useful, I'd think you'd want to be doing a lot of ...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

I don't think it matters to the players whether it's 47, 80, 107, or 130 years. It's a long time. For fans, it's been a long time, and there's the stigma of losing. I think it's cool how Theo and Hoyer have clearly been actively and intentionally selling this, as the last and greatest quest in sport...

Re: Prospects who were never Cubs

....I think the Cubs will stick to BPA but, if they are picking consistently in the upper 20s, pitchers and hitters will be more even in their grading system than in the top 10. So we may end up seeing the Cubs take more arms as a result. I personally want them to take guys with a shot at TOR statu...

Re: Prospects who were never Cubs

Thanks for interesting review. Certainly some pitchers from these recent drafts will emerge in time, who aren't recognized yet. Other teams may have guys like Steele/Sands/Cease who may emerge down the road, but aren't recognized in top-50 lists yet. The strategy of using high picks on players, and ...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

https://twitter.com/jimcallismlb/status/682036941584510977 Agree that Callis tends to rate Cubs higher than other evaluators do. But the fact that he can still view them as perhaps a top-10 system after all of the graduations really is pretty amazing. Not sure most evaluators will have them in top-...

Re: 2015-16 International Free Agency Thread

We're all speculating, but I think Dave's argument is well structured: they had access to massive $$$ for Moncada; they stated an interest in pitching "at all levels" only two months ago; and Theo is too long-term and youth-oriented to allow the farm to get emptied by two blank years. Targ...

Re: 2015-16 International Free Agency Thread

I wonder whether the opportunity to get Heyward came at some expense to the procurement budget? Theo talked about needing "creativity". If Theo was appealing to Ricketts and accounting/budget to get creative and reallocate due to special Heyward opportunity, might they have not have expect...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Reads/routes are more important than speed, and there are plenty of good CF without great speed. Everybody agrees on that, I think. And that Almora not only can but is likely to be good, speed notwithstanding. Great location/movement is more important than great velocity for pitchers, but Cy Youngs ...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

Amora has gotten uniformly favorable defensive evals. Still, it's hard to evaluate exactly how good that will project to at the big-league level. 1. It's very hard to be an average big-league CFer. Nobody who's average CF in the majors got negative defensive evals in the minors, I don't think. 2. Ha...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

I didn't mean to say he's a platoon player, just meant more that I think Parra's offensive profile is what I could see as a decent comp for him. .270-.280/.320-.330/.415-.430 type slash line with 6% BB rate and 15% K rate, low-mid teens type HR potential and gold glove defense. With great defense, ...

Re: 2016 Cubs Farm and Prospect Musings

A really good defender who hits in the low .700's-OPS is very valuable. (Inciarte.) Really good defense and high .700's-OPS (Heyward) can get hundreds of millions. We don't know where Almora will end up, but he's got the chance to be more than a platoon guy. Q's: 1. Will the 2nd-half splurge carry o...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

Cardinals are a good organization with good talent, and they'll have a lot of pieces coming back. Having Wainright back, a full season of Piscotty and Grichuk, Molina should be healthy again, Holliday, and some of the money they didn't spend on Heyward or Price will presumably still bring some usefu...

So...I'd guess this is our 25 man as of today: Montero Rizzo Zobrist Bryant Russell Schwarber Heyward Soler Ross Baez Coghlan La Stella Arrieta Lester Lackey Hendricks Hammel Rondon Strop Grimm Cahill Wood Richard Warren Ramirez / Brothers / Medina .... Nice roster. Agree, that looks pretty likely....

Re: 40-man Roster/Rule 5 Discussion

Pretty thrilled no one took Corey Black. I think he could be a decent pen arm next year. Glad we kept him, but not a fan, personally. Good arm, so that gives him chances. But so, so, so very wild. Not many useful major-league pitchers who have no control, and not many guys whose stuff is so superio...

Re: 40-man Roster/Rule 5 Discussion

What are the consequences of someone taken in the AAA phase? Drafting team gets to keep him. Cost is peanuts, like $1K or something insignificant. And unlike the major-league version, I don't think the drafting team needs to even keep the draftee on it's AAA roster. Basically it's a free transfer o...

Re: The 2016 Bullpen

I really don't think it's a gimme that Wood is traded. That's nine guys for a team that frequently runs 8 relievers, a few of whom could be optioned or even sent away (Strop, Brothers, Wood and Richard all have non-guaranteed contracts as of right now). If we need to in order to sign Heyward, fine,...
