Re: The class of 2018

It's going to be a fun class, even after guys sign, stars dim. I mean, looking through the articles on 2018, a guy like Drew Smyly could be available. At that point, he could be a guy who never found the consistency ... or he could be a young arm ready for a monster contract. Isn't Ross a FA as well...

Re: 2015 Winter Meetings Thread

A Kelly now -Arrieta then comparison seems a bit odd. Kelly had TJ a couple years back and some other physical issues, and the stuff, at last check, seemed to have backed up a bit. Arrieta was more experienced and had peripherals that suggested that some tinkering could bring about positive results....

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

Pairing Hendricks makes more sense with San Diego and Baltimore, IMO, than Cleveland, who has some rotation depth. Or Miami... :-k Soler, Hendricks, Torres, Underwood, Happ for Fernandez and Ozuna Considering the rumors for what they were asking for, I doubt that nets Fernandez. Which says more abo...

Interesting ... seems like it's sort of tied into whether or not Heyward works as a leadoff hitter?

Re: Lucroy?

Won't be worth the cost. I'm not a big fan of Montero though I am curious, though, if Stearns, in a rebuild job would consider something like Torres/Contreras/another youngster. That'd be an awful lot to give up for a C coming off a down year and only signed through 2017. At a certain point, enough...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

The Soler move that makes some sense is still Soler for Gausman, as both are a bit unproven overall, but I'm still not sure the Orioles do that without getting some pitching in return, which makes everything more complicated. If we do move Soler, I'd rather see what Ozuna would cost first than move ...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

I said it a few months back when I wanted Heyward, but front-loading, or a balanced deal, not only made lot more sense for Heyward (he gets to essentially get max money possible), it works for us, as it doesn't tie us down long term when we start extending our kids and have the extra cash influx, wh...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

The scout told me the Cubs want both Heyward and Gordon and the reports that keep linking Gordon to the Cubs are real, just like the Zobrist reports. All hinging on the Cubs moving Montero. I can sort of buy that because at this point, giving up that 3rd pick is relatively inconsequential, but ... ...

Yeah, a lot, a lot of flexibility for the Cubs right now. Heck, considering most of our talent is in the lower levels, perhaps they simply sit back and let the farm grow.

Weird ... two opt outs? Wonder if it's something like Year 3 and Year 4, letting him pick and choose his time, dependent upon his production at said time, while he is still in his prime.

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

Reading on other sites that they are saying Cobb for Baez is back on the table. Hope that's not the case. I'm not too keen on that at this juncture. Would rather wait things out a bit and see if something pops cheaper than expected.

Re: Lucroy?

Interesting. This comes sort of out of left field. Cost was supposedly really high - believe there was a rumor that Joey Gallo would have to start the package for the Rangers to get him. At the end of the day, it simply comes down to cost. I'd love to add him, but I'm simply not supportive of moving...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

Gordo says 8 years, less than $185M Probably an opt out after 4. For those that insist on giving even a single [expletive] about that right now. That's fine. Heck, if there is an opt-out, it can be after 3 as well. The Cubs were looking at this current window of 2-3 years anyways. Low 20 million AA...

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

I want to keep Soler and Javy for those tough lefties we will run in to knowing Joe likes to play matchups. I really have to believe we can trade for a SP without giving them up, we'd just have to make everyone else available, hopefully not including Contreras. Trade 5 of our top 6, if thats what i...

https://twitter.com/GDubCub/status/675385048154169345 Dear god. What a colossus of an offense. If this is the case, I'd really just sit back for the rest of the winter and see if any good deals come down the pike, whether it be with SP/Pen/depth. We have the ability to be opportunistic and choosy.

Re: Jason Heyward to CUBS!!!

Very curious what the final numbers were in that, I'm curious if the remaining 2nd tier arms (Leake/Chen) end up getting more than Heyward. Anyhow, entered the offseason saying that I would rather have Heyward, a 2nd tier pitcher, and then wait out the market. Didn't expect Lackey, but pleased with ...

Espinosa or difo would be the current two guesses, with Turner at short. They are supposedly looking for another guy.

Re: 40-man Roster/Rule 5 Discussion

Heesch had some LOOGY potential, but all in all, didn't lose anything that feels like it could even be, say, Justin Bour. Could be wrong, but Chen didn't have a role in the organization, Aybar/Ovando ... eh, and Heesch. I guess they wanted an upper level catcher to pair with Contreras in AAA. I do l...

I feel like that's an really great package that Klentak got for Giles. If that's the current cost, or close enough, for high end pen arms ... Ugh. Re: 2015 Winter Meetings Thread

I'd be awful surprised if Szczur/Vogelbach/Villanueva could get one of their arms that have been discussed. When healthy, Cobb might be better than Odorizzi, so it seems tough/unlikely that they would sell that low on Cobb, and pen arms are costly in FA right now, so late inning pen arms seem likely...
