Re: Starlin Traded to Yankees for Andrew Warren & PTBNL

I would have been happy with a lot less for Castro.

Getting anything for Castro if they take his contract is fine with me.

Re: Rosenthal: Zobrist to Cubs

I mean, outside of the exuberance of signing a player, there aren't any *great* deals to be had on the open free agent market. Four years for a guy his age is tough to swallow. But I do like this a lot in terms of how it fits with our needs. Whether we want him for 2b or RF, that's taking a highly v...

Re: Zobrist?

Replace the guy who has been known to put up bizarre near-replacement seasons randomly for guy who projects to 3.1 wins and hasn't been below 2 in seven years. Exactly the kind of move we should be making, even if four years and a bunch of money for Zobrist makes me squirm.

Re: Zobrist?

I keep coming back to Theo saying he knows our best window may be those 2 years.....(Kyle, please don't jump on that, it's not like we're not contending after that) So far, we haven't done anything that would take away from future years outside that two year window. A Zobrist contract for four year...

You sure he'll accept that demotion? You sure many of the options being discussed are actually better options in the rotation than Hammel? I'm sure he's an employee of the club and can pitch anywhere we tell him. If the next pitcher we pick up isn't better than Hammel, then that one can go to the p...

The old "having too many good players" non-problem problem.

I think it's more "what counts as depth." Trevor Cahill as next man up in your rotation isn't depth, it's the problem you're trying to avoid with depth.

Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?

I'm just annoyed we've reached the point in the offseason where all the rumors convince me that something crazy awesome is possible, so I can't be as happy with something reasonable anymore. I was perfectly happy with Lackey, trade for a decent young pitcher and a CFer. Now I'm going to be mad if we...

Re: Shelby Miller/Javy deal close? Nothing to see here

I sometimes wonder if the front office isn't floating the occasional fake rumor to Wittenmeyer indirectly to screw with him. His columns are stupid, but he's been a solid reporter in the past and the last two years he's had a mix of getting stuff right and a few things hilariously wrong.

It's a lot more complicated than "Well, the rules say it's OK." I thought this article did a good job of explaining it: https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/the-kris-bryant-situation-as-explained-by-a-labor-lawyer As to the merits of that grievance: The best argument for the union is that...

That's an awful lot of protective equipment for a left fielder, but given his propensity for dropping balls it might be prudent.

trade javy for a TB starter & mcgee, salary dump hammel + wood

I'd rather not cut into our pitching that much if we don't have to. I'd dump Castro before Hammel.

I still think Moore would be a good buy. He was almost an unparalleled prospect about that... http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/2012/2612998.html #42 and #89 amuse me. Brett Jackson 15 spots ahead of Anthony Rizzo. Javier Baez and Matt Szczur 3 spots apart.

I don't see how we could afford Heyward unless we moved Castro. The highest-end reports had us with $30m to spend, and we've gone through more than 2/3rds of that.

I wonder how much he's getting. I saw $5m-$8m guaranteed attached to his name in some places, which seems nutso to me for a guy who had 17 good innings.
