Favorite Individual Sports Play

Postby Sammy's Boombox » Thu Nov 05, 2015 10:19 am

I put this in Cubs Discussions because I imagine a lot of the answers will be from the Cubs.

Before this postseason my single favorite sports play was Wood's HR in Game 7 of the NLCS.

I think that has been surpassed by the Baez HR off Lackey and Rondon striking out Piscotty.

Sammy HR, Game 1, 2003 NLCS.
During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

If I'm ever asked from now on why I like baseball, i'm going to pull up a video of Kyle Schwarber putting a baseball on top of the video board.

(honorable mentions: Hester taking the opening kick of the Super Bowl back, Paxson 3 to finish the first 3 peat, Taj postering Wade in game 1 of the ECF, just for how jacked I was at that moment Nomar's first AB as a Cub)

I love the Cubs, but the lack of championship moments means I can't make my favorite play from them. This is mine, without question:

This was game 3 of the first round back during OKC's second year. The Thunder had lost both games 1 and 2, but they had had their moments.

It was also the first home playoff game in OKC history, so me and my brother got tickets. Short story long, the crowd was like absurdly wild 3 hours before the game started, and I joked that they would tire themselves out before tipoff. Sure enough, LA went on like a 12-0 run to start the game and the place turned into a mausoleum.

But late in the game they went on a run. Westbrook hit that dunk, a couple transition threes in a row and all of a sudden they had the lead. It was the coolest thing i've ever seen happen live.

Cubs are my favorite team, but my best moments are all Mike......Over Ehlo, shrugging against Portland, over Russell, changing arms on layup against Lakers, game winner against Georgetown when I was 6. No idea how I'd rank them.
Additional rule: you have to have one or the other. The only exception is you have an amazing board name. davell, I'm looking at you; put up a [expletive] avatar or something if your name only sounds like somebody tried say Dave as they lapsed into a coma.

Hmm...it is impossible for me to pick one. There are so many great Cubs moments from 2003 and this year. 17 Seconds. So many Jordan moments. Bears winning the superbowl. But I'll pick one that I doubt anyone else will...

Dernier leading off game 1 (for the Cubs) with a HR against the Padres in the first game of the '84 playoffs. My 17 year old self was convinced that meant the Cubs were going to win it all.

for cubs the two schwarber HRs (meaning river and scoreboard) and the baez HR...i can't decide.

for sports in general, it has to be a jordan moment. those teams are what got me into sports. just not sure which one.

Cubs: Wood's game 7 NLCS HR and Sammy's game 1 NLCS HR
Bears: Hester's Super Bowl kickoff return and Mike Brown's pick six against the 49ers in 2001 after a huge comeback (some bias because I was at this game)
Blackhawks: Kane's Game 6 winner in 2010 to clinch the Cup and 17 Seconds
Mizzou: Sacking Todd Reesing in 2007 to clinch the win over KU/move to #1 in the country

Definiterly Trey Burke against Kansas (sorry snood). Just a ridiculous shot to cap a ridiculous late game comeback against a blue blood program in the Sweet 16.

For my Chicago teams:

Cubs: Schwarber's HR in the Wild Card game. It was at that moment I knew for certain that the Cubs weren't going to 2008 their way through a brief playoff run.

Bears: Gould's GW field goal against the Seahawks in the 2006 divisional game

Blackhawks: Seabrooks goal in OT of Game 7 against the Wings. There have been bigger goals and bigger games, but this one felt so damn good.

Bulls: Jo's steal and dunk over Pierce in 3OT of game 6 against the Celtics in 2009. Just an awesome all around play in a critical moment

For the Cubs, got to be the Sammy HR in game 1 of the NLCS. Schwarber's massive dongs from this year get on the list too. Soriano had a walk-off slam in 2009 against Houston that I saw in person, so I have to nod to that as well.

Other sports:
MJ's last sequence in the '98 Finals and GW shot in Game 1 of '97 Finals
Everett Golson's 3 straight improv plays to tie game against Pitt in '12 with 2 minutes left to preserve unbeaten regular season ('I was there' bias)
Tom Zbikowski punt return for TD to give ND lead in Bush Push game ('I was there' bias)
Jerian Grant's 12 points in 28 seconds to tie game vs Louisville in '13
Everything in the ND/Kentucky Elite 8 game in March up to the last couple of minutes. I'm still not over that one. Might never be.
Steve Smith 2OT winning TD in '03 divisional playoff game at St. Louis
Steve Smith 2 long-bomb TDs in '05 divisional playoff at Chicago (sorry)

Does it have to be something we remember? Something that happened in our lifetime? I need more parameters.

I'm considering it stuff I remember, which is why there isn't more MJ on my list - I was 11 when he last played for the Bulls.

In this case it's Wood's game 7 HR. I'll never forget watching the crowd's reaction on TV and wishing I was there so badly.

1. MJ winning shot in 98
2. Kane winner in 2010
3. Paxson winning shot in 93
4. 17 seconds (counts as 1 in my book)
5. Kerr winning shot in 97
6. Hester return in SB
7. Sosa HR Game 1 NLCS
8. Aramis GS in Game 4 NLCS
9. Wood 20th K
10. Schwarbomb vs. Cards in NLDS

Basketball, Baseball, and OT Hockey lend themselves to more of these moments than football where there are rarely game-winning last second touchdowns in important games due to the length of time required for a length of the field drive. Even though a winning FG is cool, it's not nearly as exciting. The Hester return was unbelievable, though, especially the camera shot of him watching himself on the jumbotron reflected on his helmet visor.

Aramis' grand slam in game 4 of the 2003 NLCS gets some consideration from me, because it was when I was sure we were going to the world series (ugh). I want to say Wood's game 7 homer, but the stink of death was on the series at that point, and I didn't enjoy it as much as I might have.

Oh, speaking of college plays....the Boise State hook and ladder to beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl is at least in my top 5.
