So the question now becomes, would you rather have 6 years of Marte or 1 of Cabrera?

Either one would look good on the Cubs.

.275/.332/.440 vs. .284/.332/.428 for their careers to date

but i would love it if Lake knew how to use his speed like Marte does

Diamondbacks reliever David Hernandez has a torn UCL and may require Tommy John surgery, Hernandez's agent Jason Hoffman tells FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link).

Well gosh darn, maybe we can ask the Dbacks for Brad Ziegler instead.

Well, it's no longer the offseason but I don't see a better place for this:

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Rays agree to six-year extension with RHP Chris Archer in range of $25M. Deal begins this season and includes two club options.

Going to be fascinating to see how the Garza trades work out in the long run:

Rays: Chris Archer (2.1 WAR so far), Hak-Ju-Lee, Robinson Chirinos (0.3 of WAR total), Sam Fuld (1.8 WAR total), Brandon Guyer (0.1 WAR so far)
Cubs: Matt Garza (5.5 WAR total), Zac Rosscup (0.2 WAR so far), Fernando Perez (0 WAR), Mike Olt, CJ Edwards, Neil Ramirez, Justin Grimm (0.2 WAR so far)
Rangers: Matt Garza (-0.1 WAR total)--LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

So, basically, with the basically useless performance from Justin Grimm last year, the Cubs already won the Garza/Rangers trade unless they get negative WAR from the other guys going forward.

Overall, there's a chance the Rays still win the trade if Archer and Lee are great, but it's likely the Garza series of trades works out well for the Cubs. Most of that is due to Theo/Jed making up for Hendry's trade.

Have a tough time seeing Lee being great at this point.

[The sound of fastballs] was one of those things that told me my pitches were fast....because I've never heard pitches as loud as mine.

That was with Texas in 2012, so I didn't include it as part of the trade. Unless he was -0.1 Opening Day, in which case I didn't see that on Baseball Reference so far.

I was looking on Fangraphs, which does have him -0.1 already.

Fangraphs has him at that for this season, but right now it's an exercise in stupidity to even look at it.

They are talking about Lorenzo Cain too, if my source is correct.

Samardzija and Barney for Cain, Crow and 2 pitching prospects (no names given to me).

Those better be really good pitching prospects.

No kidding.

Sooo I'd still rather have what we got for Samardz, but holy [expletive] were most of us wrong about Cain.

The O's made an offer to Cespedes for 5 years and in the 75-90M range. I'd be stunned if he went for less than $20M per year but I guess there's just not that much of a market for the OFers.
In Theo we trust.

Really don't see Cespedes signing for that right now. You've waited this long, a little longer won't hurt. I also think the Orioles might be leaking information to try and spur Chris Davis along. It's possible Cespedes gets desperate, but once one of the remaining big 3 fall (Davis/Cespedes/Upton), the others should probably slot in somewhere. Until then, there's probably not a huge rush as of mid-January.

Still think the Orioles muffed this entire offseason up. With their relatively weak farm, aging core players, number of free agents, and a front office unwilling to shell out the huge dollars (by some indications, their Davis offer was from ownership), they should've taken a step back and focused on the future. They didn't need to tear down and completely rebuild (for example, there was zero reason for them to move Machado and even Schoop, outside of the "too good to pass up" deal), but they should've moved some parts (Zach Britton comes to mind, letting O'Day go and collecting the pick, while giving Givens/Wright a shot at the setup job would've been a nice future move, and I would've even considered moving Adam Jones) and focused on the future. Best case is, they get lucky and sneak into the playoffs, but that seems like a huge, huge longshot. They can't even really blame Wieters coming back that much - sure that probably screwed up some plans, but they weren't going to be in on Chen or any top pitcher, and the chances of them signing Davis AND another impact bat seemed slim (unless it was bargain hunting).

Best case now seems to be signing Cespedes or Davis and trying to grab a bargain (maybe Upton, but I still gotta think someone will given Upton at least a 3-5 year type offer; or maybe an arm, or two, from Lincecum/Lee/Fister type gambles; actually, Fowler makes a lot of sense here as a corner OF/top of the order hitter ). They have to hope Harvey/Bundy are really back, and that their thin crop of intriguing hitters all come through. Hell, I still wonder if an early enough Zach Britton trade might've brought back enough pieces to fill a couple holes, while still having a solid pen.

I'm gonna lock this since it's clearly confusing. I guess just link to old stuff like that in the future from another thread?
