Kazmir

Postby Little Slide Rooter » Thu Jun 25, 2015 6:45 pm

http://www.bleachernation.com/2015/06/25/report-cubs-targeting-scott-kazmir-as-possible-trade-piece/

I feel as though he's been brought up in multiple trade threads. But seeing as there's some actual smoke here, it should have its own thread.

He's been healthy and productive for almost 2 1/2 seasons after being left for dead. So far, he's put together a 1.9 WAR. It's easy for people to go crazy in terms of potential return. And if you look at the Facebook thread attached to this, plenty of them are.

My starting offer would be Dan Vogelbach and Daury Torrez.

And I'm sure that a lot of you laughing and desperately searching the web for gifs and memes. But using as a template the package that we got for a guy who was at the time, one of the best starting pitchers in the NL, and with a 3.5 WAR to back it up, Ryan Dempster, it's not that unrealistic.

Sure, the return was a bit of a disappointment following the Delgado fiasco. But the blocked, fringe top 100 prospect and little known but intriguing young pitching prospect was a very good return for the front end but non-elite rental.

Yeah, Dempster was 35 at the time and Kazmir 31, but when talking about a healthy and productive 2 month rental, does that really make a difference?

If Kazmir was that cheap, Latos would be doable and cheap.

They just need a 5th starter running beeler/wada/other crap AAA pitcher out there for the stretch is no bueno

Nottingham is a guy who is going to finish well within the top 100 prospects. Kazmir didn't come that cheap.

He's a better prospect than Zagunis

Sure you could comp them pretty quickly....Nottingham is several years younger, also in High A ball, out hitting Zagunis in High A (though he is in the Cal), and is still playing C in the pros.

We don't really have one to be honest. I guess Ian Happ would currently be the closest.

Nottingham seems like a Jesus Montero-type prospect (which is actually meant to be flattering in this case) with less bonus-hype

it's at this point we remember he was actually traded for Michael Pineda...

I haven't seen anything on him as being a top 100 type. Kiley said top 150ish and that's the best I've seen. Seems pretty fair for Kazmir to me.
Additional rule: you have to have one or the other. The only exception is you have an amazing board name. davell, I'm looking at you; put up a [expletive] avatar or something if your name only sounds like somebody tried say Dave as they lapsed into a coma.

Sickels had him #71 on his midseason list.

Ah, he counts. But I'm definitely not a fan of his.

I think Nottingham's profile is probably going to make him one of those borderline top 100 candidates - legit power, some defensive questions behind the plate, and relatively far away. I could see it go either way ... that general profile tends to feel like borderline top 100.

As for the deal ... I'm always fascinated with Beane deals, and from his perspective, I totally get this deal. He goes after what he can't get in FA - power hitters, and gets a solid arm along with it. Sure, the guys far away, but they have some system depth that he they didn't need to force a return.

Overall value ... I think it's about right. I could buy arguments on both sides of it, tbh, and it really would probably be dependent solely on how one feels about Nottingham. I wonder if this move will really set the tone for the market, or if it will be Beane striking early for something he liked.

Not really. One domino has fallen, so the sellers have that to their advantage. And the return was mostly underwelming, so the buyers have that. But at the end of the day, the market depends on how much the buyers want the sellers have.
