Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?
20M AAV for heyward is definitely on the low end of what i would expect. if it's 10/200 i'll be pretty annoyed that the cubs didn't sign him.
Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?
Could they offer an opt out AND a NTC that kicks in after the opt out time period?

He'd have to be pretty close to his 10/5 rights by the time his opt out expired/he didn't exercise it and he decided to ride this current contract out anyways, so sure

Wait... so Jim Bowden said that the Cubs are the front runners and that they are the team willing to go the furthest to sign Heyward? Did I miss that somewhere in this thread?

Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?
I bet this goes down at like 3 am or something

Bowden says a lot of things, most of them are dumb, but I don't recall seeing this. Where/when did he say it?

In the video that pops up on this page: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/14338 ... on-heyward
The one with Jim Bowden and Buster Olney.

Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?
I'll never be able to take Bowden seriously again after the Ralph incident.

Jason Heyward's middle name is "Alias."

Doesn't Zobrist have a kid named Zion or did I just make that up?
We're in Empire mode. Middle names don't mean [expletive].
During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

This calm before the storm is boring now. Yaaaawwn
Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?
I really want Heyward on this team, but that would make a Soler trade much more likely which would make me sad.

I don't get why those two things need to be linked

they don't, but if you go by the guy who has had the most info this winter, they very well might be

Re: Jason Heyward - 2016 CF?
Now I'd be really surprised if Soler gets dealt, even if we sign Heyward. I doubt Theo wants to move him for anything less than a Salazar type talent, and after the haul the Braves just got, teams are going to want a lot more than Soler for their stud pitchers.

Yeah I know they seem to be linked, I just don't get it as to how it makes us a better team next year by signing Heyward and trading Soler. After the Miller trade I don't see us getting a Carrasco type value for Soler straight up and we still have a huge hole in CF/RF if Soler is traded.

Just because Dave Stewart is a [expletive] lummox doesn't mean everyone else is
"I don't think this team improves by trading Scott Feldman," Samardzija said.

It's not unlike the Samrdzjia trade. Nobody was suckered into anything. The knew that 28 other teams would want to get in on Miller, and with no urgency to deal on the sellers end, talks could have gone into the summer and beyond. With thiat in mind, they didn't bother waiting to blow everybody else out of the water, they just bought the pool.
And you really can't base market value on such a situation.

I like how we all burned ourselves out to the point that now we're just gonna sit here and wait till we find out who signs him.

Between paying Pujols until the day he dies and Hamilton some $75MM to play for a division rival, you'd think they'd be counting their pennies for Trout's inevitable, epic pay day.
They've got $40m from Weaver and Wilson coming off the books after this year, and then Hamilton's $26m after that. Of course, that's when Trout's first pay kicks in (going from $20 to $34m), but they aren't in terrible shape. Plus, Trout and Heyward in the same outfield might let them play with 5 infielders the whole game.
And every team is printing money. The Angels aren't going to be hurting as long as Moreno is fine not making absurd profits.
