If Heyward uses the first opt-out:
Contract was 3/$78, or an average of $26M per year. With $20M of that being deferred.

If Heyward doesn't use the first opt-out, but accumulates 550+ PA in 2019 and uses the second opt-out:
Contract is 4/$98, or an average of $24.5M per year. With $20M of that being deferred.

I wouldn't have hesitated to give him either of those contracts this offseason. So I'm pretty thrilled with the contract even if he uses the opt-outs.

The total value of the contract dropped to 179 or so, I read somewhere a few minutes ago. My guess is the signing bonus is pushed back maybe even until AFTER the contract is up.

Sounds perfectly reasonable for his pre-30 yr old seasons. I'm guessing this is where the Cards lost ground, wanting to preserve as much inflexibility as they could tying him up into a long deal.
