Great answer to Sharma's question

Edit: Knew that Arrieta HR would be brought up. Great swing on that pitch

it's 15 minutes after heyward's introduced and waddle & silvy have their first caller to say "we paid $184m for a right fielder that doesn't hit home runs"

The Cubs sent out a promo email to go see Jason Heyward at Wrigley Field but they didn't photoshop him out of his Cardinal uniform, lol...

Kind of funny...I mean obviously they could've. Even MLB Trade Rumors did.

Heyman finally got the contract details. In short, big signing bonus is deferred, the 2nd opt out is conditional, and he gets a NTC.

2016 salary in the teens? Why whoever could imagine that? Opt outs? Deferred money? What a hodge podge.

So basically the Cubs sign Heyward for 3 years, $58m with two player options for 1yr/$20m and then 4yr/$86m with $20m bonus deferred until he leaves.

If Heyward uses the first opt-out:
Contract was 3/$78, or an average of $26M per year. With $20M of that being deferred.

If Heyward doesn't use the first opt-out, but accumulates 550+ PA in 2019 and uses the second opt-out:
Contract is 4/$98, or an average of $24.5M per year. With $20M of that being deferred.

I wouldn't have hesitated to give him either of those contracts this offseason. So I'm pretty thrilled with the contract even if he uses the opt-outs.

If he opts out, the signing bonus is no longer deferred. So 3/78 or 4/98 if he opts out.

so if he opts out after 3, it's a $26M AAV basically, right?

The total value of the contract dropped to 179 or so, I read somewhere a few minutes ago. My guess is the signing bonus is pushed back maybe even until AFTER the contract is up.
Additional rule: you have to have one or the other. The only exception is you have an amazing board name. davell, I'm looking at you; put up a [expletive] avatar or something if your name only sounds like somebody tried say Dave as they lapsed into a coma.

Sounds perfectly reasonable for his pre-30 yr old seasons. I'm guessing this is where the Cards lost ground, wanting to preserve as much inflexibility as they could tying him up into a long deal.
A student of philosophy, eager to display his powers of argument, approached Diogenes, introduced himself and said, "If it pleases you, sir, let me prove to you that there is no such thing as motion." Whereupon Diogenes immediately got up and left.
