It depends on if you value your jersey collection or if you just want a cheap way to display your fandom. If it's the former, then of course you pay the extra.

i mean i don't wear jerseys as it is, but i've seen lots of really obvious knock offs

if there are good ones (that i haven't noticed), i'd probably buy one of those if I wore jerseys, but i have yet to come across one. and holy [expletive], some are REALLY bad.

It's like any knock off. A major component of authenticity is knowing it's authentic.
During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

Then again, a lot look like they are exactly the same but are unlicensed. My nephew got a Dexter Fowler jersey (sort of as a joke) and I couldn't tell the difference.

I thought this thread was going to be about some kind of terrible vendetta the Chinese have against gooney and his family.

I wouldn't call that vendetta "terrible"

I have 3 knockoff jerseys (football), and 1 authentic (baseball). 2 of the knockoffs, you can't even tell. But the other (Forte jersey), the orange trim fades out to or in from a pink color if you look closely. And the numbers are ironed on and not stitched which makes a huge difference.

I don't think I'll ever buy another knockoff though. I don't wear jerseys as much as I did when I bought all of these (my job about 5-6 years ago, we'd all wear jerseys on casual Friday), and the girl who used to order them from one of the Chinese sites used to get things seized by the FBI more and more frequently when I stopped buying them. So, I will buy authentic if I want any more. I also hate that with free agency, jerseys can be obsolete in a hurry if that player gets cut, traded, or simply leaves for more money.

sherseys are the way to go for adults imo

ETA: unless it's to an actual game - which i view as perfectly fine. unfortunately, i'm not one of you lucky jerks that really ever gets that opportunity. and thanks to daycare costs, probably won't anytime soon. THANKS, HENRY. (just kidding when i take him to his first cubs game that is going to be so damn amazing).

Baseball (and really any sports) jerseys are so damn expensive that I can't imagine buying one for a current player unless he's a slam dunk legend. I ended up just getting a Santo when I finally did get one because I wanted to make sure it would always be relevant.

I don't think that really matters too much unless it's something really dumb like getting a Theriot or Barney or even Fukudome jersey. It's completely subjective, but those are the ones that stick out to me; if I see someone with a Soriano jersey, or Prior's, or Castro's in a few years it's just like, "oh, that's that player that was actually really awesome for the Cubs."

i'm either cheap or broke (lol just kidding i'm cheap bc i'm broke) but that's my criteria for sherseys. i'm wearing my Bryant shersey right now.

yeah...if you have a guy who was a very good player for your team for at least 3 years (and doesn't necessarily need to be that long - you will never look stupid in a cubs jake arrieta jersey), i'd say you're in the clear.

Prior, for me, definitely falls into that exception. That's the one named jersey I still have, and [expletive] anyone who thinks it's lame; him in 2003 makes it worth it.

I went to a game with a friend a couple years ago who was baffled that the rest of us didn't think it was pathetic that we saw a few Derrek Lee jerseys. It was really weird. Then I saw him a few months later wearing a Fukudome shirsey and it all made sense.

I think it depends on the situation. A Peyton Manning Colts jersey is fine now and forever (debatable if they're actually playing Denver). But a DeSean Jackson Eagles jersey (which I have) is not a great idea. I don't think it's really a case of "looking stupid", it's more of rooting for someone who doesn't play for your team anymore, and may not identify with it now or in the future. Basically, if that player built a legendary career on your team and goes to another, I think it's cool. Arrieta hasn't been legendary for a long period of time as a Cub. If he goes to the Angels in 2 years and continues to pitch there at a high level, I don't think I can identify him with the Cubs anymore.

I was deciding which Hawks jersey to buy had had narrowed it down to Saad, Kane and Hossa. At the last moment I decided on Hossa. Really dodged a bullet with that choice.

In a related story, the other day I saw a guy wearing a Toews home red (keep in mind that I live in MD and there are maybe 4 other hockey fans within 100 miles). He had it over a hoodie and was wearing it as a sweater/ light jacket. Fair or foul?

I bought a Rizzo fourth of july replica. It's annoying that they didn't make authentics of those with the numbers.

That's the replica. I don't mean fake. They don't make the authentic one with the American flag and a player's name for some reason.

I realized after my original post it sounded like I meant I bought a fake.

I just bought a slew of Addison Russell Shirsey's for 7 bucks apiece. At least another 6 years before its time to replace!

Buddy of mine ordered 3 last year. The Arrieta one he got was ridiculous; the gap between the "ARRIETA" and the MLB logo on the back was, like, 10 inches I'm not joking. He tried to get a refund but I think they only gave him $5 back. I'll try to get a picture, its pretty funny.
