2007 Draft Picks who have signed

Postby Wrigley Rat » Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:05 pm

Jose Made - 20th round draft pick

After playing a mere two games in a Bomber uniform, the team's biggest star was packing his bags for the Cubs' draft camp in Arizona after signing a contract with Chicago on Saturday.

Barfelz said that the Cubs - who intend to try Made out at second base - are getting a phenomenal natural athlete with a near-complete baseball skill set as well.

"He's got tremendous speed, great hands and a strong arm," said Barfelz. "He's not a home run hitter, but with that speed he can really make things happen when he makes contact."

Splinter, thanks much for the updates on the signings. Much appreciated. Keep em coming as you can.

Certainly Barney, Wright, Hardman, and Smith have done well in the college playoffs.

From BA's review of CSUF:

Who's Hot: You mean besides the whole team? How about Clark Hardman--the redshirt junior, the team's best hitter all year anyway, is a scalding 12-for-23 (.522) in the postseason with two homers.

Tony Thomas already has been tabbed as national player of the year twice and the second baseman also was named a first-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. A third-round pick of the Chicago Cubs, the junior will learn today if he can add the Dick Howser Award to his list of honors.

The honor that goes to college baseball's top player is named for FSU's first All-American. J.D. Drew is the only Seminole to win the award. He's still negotiating with the Cubs, but is expected to sign soon.

Left-hander Arik Hempy was drafted in the 17th round by the Chicago Cubs.

“It’s looking like I’m going to sign right now,” Hempy said Thursday.

Added 39th rounder C Roberto Sabates to the signed list.

The Cubs signed three non-drafted free agents - Wichita State IF Derek Schermerhorn (who's reported to Boise), Bradley P Michael Christl and Virginia Wesleyan College C Matt Hudgins.

Cubs Talk had this to say about some of the guys the Cubs drafted:

The Cubs also intend to follow many other drafted players’ progress in various summer leagues with hopes of signing those players at a later date.

Several of those players include: LHP James Russell, a 14th-round draft pick from the University of Texas, his Longhorns teammate and catcher Preston Clark (33rd round), and INF Victor Sanchez (25th round).

Not necessarily. All signees report to Mesa to get acclimated with pro ball and those who are ready can move up. His bat is more advances than Mesa, but I wonder about his defense and catching mechanics.

is there a catch-all webpage with contract status of all the draftees? I'm interested to follow who signs and for how much (esp. since I follow a Short-A team and those signees often funnel into the league)

You can go by team or round (if you're a subscriber, click on the advanced one for scouting reports for the big names). The signings are a bit behind, though, as you can tell for their Cubs list as compared to ours.

OF Brandon Guyer (5th rounder from U. Virginia) signed and passes physical:

Another Virginia junior that was drafted, outfielder Brandon Guyer, also agreed in principle to a contract with the Chicago Cubs.

It did not come, however, without a physical with a Cubs’ team doctor in Chicago on Monday. After passing the physical, Guyer said he considers himself “a Cub.”

While his injured shoulder would have kept him from a Doolittle-like batting practice experience, Guyer did take in the Cubs’ game on Sunday from right behind the plate.

“Wrigley Field is an amazing place,” Guyer said. “It was a great experience.

“I passed my physical and I am flying to Arizona on Thursday [for rehab]. Hopefully, things go well and I can play this summer in Boise, Idaho.”

If so, Guyer would join former Virginia pitcher Casey Lambert, a sixth-round selection by the Cubs.

Guyer heads to Arizona on Thursday to continue his rehab.

LHP Arik Hempy (17th rounder from U. South Carolina) signed:

rik Hempy’s pro baseball career is about to begin, after receiving a contract offer and a clean bill of health from the Chicago Cubs.

The South Carolina pitcher said Tuesday night he has agreed to terms on a contract with the Cubs, who drafted him in the 17th round of the first-year player draft two weeks ago.

...

Hempy was in Arizona on Tuesday, after spending three days in Chicago getting looked over by the Cubs’ medical staff. He said the Cubs plan to have him throw some bullpen sessions and play in short relief for their Rookie League affiliate, then will send him to their lower-Class A affiliate later this season.
