Re: McCutchen to the Giants

The Giants’ long term obligations are insane. In 2021 they’ll owe 34 year old Belt $17.2M, 35 year old Posey and Crawford $21.4M and $15.2M, and 36 year old Longoria and Cueto $18.5M and $21.8M. That’s $94.1M owed to five players where it will be a minor miracle if they get any positive performance ...

He’s way out ahead. Any pitcher with a decent change up will own him. Hard pass.

Re: Starlin wants a trade

Starlin would be a good fit with the Brewers.

Fortunately (for the Cubs) I think the Brewers are still operating under the delusion that Villar is actually good.

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

The Brewers have already signed Gallardo and Chacin. I would have thought that took them out of the race for any of the higher tier pitchers.

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

One thing that might make the Cubs less inclined to sign Arrieta is that I believe his 5 and 10 rights would kick in the second year of any deal they sign with him.

Signing an aging pitcher is scary enough without signing one you might not be able to move as his skills diminish.

If we can’t get a very good pitcher for cheap, I guess I’d rather have a very good pitcher for expensive than a not very good pitcher for cheap.

Since all that money was coming off the books next year anyway, that Dodgers deal has to be for Yu Darvish money, right?

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

Losing 4 Years of Russell, for 1 year of Machado and then a 300+M FA contract in 2019, vs keeping 4 years of Russell and spending 350-400M on Harper. Pretty much a no brainer from my side. Of course that's assuming Harper accepts our offer over the 4 or 5 other $400 million offers on the table. But...

Re: Bullpen Options

I'd take Davis back for fewer years and less money than Melancon's 4 for $60M-ish.

Is he a risk? Yeah. But the Cubs have better depth around him this year if Wilson is even a fraction of his former self.

Re: Smyly for the camera

I was thinking maybe a shorter term option is on the table, now that I look at the rentals Corbin is the only name that would conceivably make sense. J.A. Happ might be another guy if the Jays decide to punt. The Cubs probably wouldn't have to give up an actual asset to get Edinson Volquez from the...

Re: Winter Meetings 2017 thread

Baez or Russell to the Padres only seems to make sense to me if there’s a second move following that up, such as a trade with the Rays or Jays for Archer or Stroman. I'm a little slow, but I'm not following. How does trading away a middle infielder make more sense if followed up by a trade for a st...

Re: Where will Giancar-go? The Yankees.

Yeah, if the Yankees are going to lap the luxury tax next year, they won’t make a move that forces Judge or Stanton to the DH to do it. They’ll fill one of their chronic holes with Kershaw or Machado.

Re: Cubs sign Tyler Chatwood for 3/$38M

5.7 WAR and a 115 ERA+ over the last two years for a contract that's at the mid-point between what Rich Hill and Ivan Nova got last year. Or basically Edinson Volquez's contract plus one year to a player 6 years younger than Volquez. Seems pretty reasonable to me. He hasn't had 5.7 fWAR in his care...

Re: Where will Giancar-go?

Seriously, tho, if they do this, this makes them less of a threat against us for Harper right? It's the old "bird in hand," right. At the very least, the Cubs, Nats, and Yankees will be pushing all their chips in to try to get Harper. Probably other teams as well. The Dodgers might have a...

Which makes wanting Giancarlo strange because in about 4 years that contract is going to look just as bad as Pujols' contract.

Signing Otahni means the Cubs maybe don’t go get a Jon Jay replacement. It doesn’t mean that they suddenly MUST trade someone from their young core.

Re: The Mock Off Season Thread

Any plan that involves signing Harper is going to take the Cubs over the luxury tax, or be really bad. The one exception would be a Heyward trade/opt-out, which is basically a non-starter at the moment. That's okay, as long as they stay under this year they don't have to be all that concerned about...

Re: ITT: Raisin & Tom/King Kong Obsess Over Shohei Ohtani

Other than the Yankees, what AL competitor actually has DH at bats to give? The Mariners, for example, can’t exactly promise 600 plate appearances to Ohtani when they’ve got Nelson Cruz already in the DH slot. Other than the Yankees and Houston, I don’t see an AL team (that doesn’t completely suck) ...

One small correction to a couple of the posts above... Tsuyoshi Wada signed with Baltimore out of the NPB. Got hurt. Never pitched in the Majors and then signed with the Cubs after the Orioles didn’t re-sign him.
