Re: 2020 roster

From July 2018-2019 Almora hit .234/.270/.343 with a 58 wRC+ in ~600 PAs & rated awful defensively. From 2018-2019 he had 830 PAs, 183 guys had 800+ he ranked 175th in wRC+, 166th in OBP and 173rd in WAR. He’s a bad baseball player, there’s no reason to keep him and there isn’t much pedigree/num...

Re: Astros stole signs electronically in 2017

https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/statuses/1195873535681544192 A week ago I assumed their punishment was gonna be in the neighborhood of the Cards' hacking scandal. A few days ago I wondered if we might see similar to the Braves' IFA scandal. Now? I wonder if that might be the floor. Yeah this is b...

Re: 2019-20 Offseason Rumors/General Chit-Chat

Dude, MLB teams have been structuring deals this way for years with option years being “not guaranteed.” It has nothing to do with your thinking the MLB is being NFL’ized. My mistake, MLB contracts reported with a huge distinction between guaranteed money and total value is a tale as told as time. ...

Re: 2019-20 Offseason Rumors/General Chit-Chat

I think they’re way more concerned about LT value than absolute value, so i don’t see much benefit to backloading the first few years of a Baez (or Bryant) extension. Also when most guys are extended with buying out Arb years isn’t it pretty common practice to still pay them around what they would’...

Re: 2019-20 Offseason Rumors/General Chit-Chat

What about a deal that helps the Cubs achieve payroll flexibility in 2020 and 2021 and locks Báez in long-term? A former high-ranking MLB executive suggested a deal structure that pays Báez $10 million in 2020, $16 million in 2021, plus six additional years at an average annual value of $23 million...

Yu’s Twitter timeline is wild right now. Based on the translations, it looks like Yahoo Japan ran a story about a hit and run where a guy killed someone(s) but used a photo of Darvish in the headline. https://twitter.com/faridyu/status/1195568607662616578?s=21 There’s also this https://twitter.com/f...

Re: 2020 roster

Akiyama seems like a great fit for the roster, but being LH it would really become important to find a RH bat who can handle CF and it better not be horsefeathering Almora. Also I wonder if him and Yu know each other or played together ever, could help in the recruiting/selling. Obviously Yu has bee...

Re: 2019-20 Offseason Rumors/General Chit-Chat

https://twitter.com/GDubCub/status/1195394529219796993 Xander Bogaerts is probably the closest comp, and he got 6/120 last winter. That being said he was a year younger, a little better, and a year closer to FA, so maybe more like 6/100? AAV seems right given the two Arb years. Javy’s gonna make ~$...

Re: sometimes deck chairs need to be rearranged

and I'm not confident in this FO being able to adequately address the perpetual pitching issues they're going to have through the next two seasons without trying something/someone new. They seem to very much be trying something(s) and someone(s) new going back ~2 years now with the changes made int...

Death by a million paper cuts for us the last 2-3 years vs the Astros death by a few gunshots since their WS, essentially.

Re: sometimes deck chairs need to be rearranged

Yes, I am very sure that the Astros outside pitching pickups (especially their starters) contributed to them being appreciably more competitive post-their WS win than the Cubs have been (due in no small part to their pitching moves). Post WS win they did better than us in the acquisitions performin...

Re: sometimes deck chairs need to be rearranged

Well, sure we can; there's the Astros, too. Except they did the whole, "horsefeathers drafting pitchers; we'll get them other ways," much better. Are we sure about that moving forward? Whitley took a massive step back this year, their depth was so bad they were bullpenning games after 3 s...

Re: sometimes deck chairs need to be rearranged

Happ and Schwarber are valuable players; I take issue with them being tossed out like they're proof that it's ludicrous to expect this FO to have someone running the farm who could, apparently inexplicably, both have an eye for offensive talent and could just barely competently handle the pitching ...

Re: sometimes deck chairs need to be rearranged

But in those 6 you have Brendan Rogers and Kyle Tucker, both of which are much more valuable than Ian Happ. Agree to disagree, demonstrating you can make the leap to producing at the MLB level is the biggest jump, so even if they have higher ceilings(especially debatable for Tucker), I'm not going ...

Re: sometimes deck chairs need to be rearranged

Of the Top 10 picks in Happ's draft, 6 of them either haven't made MLB or have provided negative bWAR in a brief amount of time. 5 for Schwarber's Top 10. That's the baseline, not whether the player was an especially good major leaguer. That's a little bit of an oversimplification, looking at Happ'...

Also: hoisting up Ian Happ like he's this amazing slam dunk argument in favor of McLeod being granted perpetual farm system Grand Poobah status is certainly something. And, horsefeathers, let's face it, Schwarber, too. https://media0.giphy.com/media/NqMeOkHtTRkfC/giphy.gif They’ve combined for 13.9...

Yeah assuming he can get back to like 85-90% of his former self this makes the Kimbrel deal look a lot better for only a few mil more and no draft pick.

Re: Braves Sign Will Smith

Sadly, I never really figured we were a realistic option since I'm sure he wants to close. That Atlanta bullpen has gone from a real weakness to very solid since the trade deadline. Smith is solid, but I wasn’t interested in him for the draft pick and contract he’d go for so this is no real lost op...

Abreu and Odorizzi accepted their QO’s. I believe everyone else declined theirs or will.
