Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-15-18

This is a thing with promoting young players really aggressively. If they do great while being really young, it's "Wow", and you know something is terrific. But if they stink, as Ademan has done, it's hard to evaluate. Does he stink because he doesn't have it and never will? Or can we excu...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-9-18

Watched the Little game last night. What was most improved was his location. Was spotting the FB on the outside corner to lefties quite well. He left it up a bit too but it didn't hurt him. The Lugnuts announcers said his FB had late life. It was difficult to see much movement from their CF camera ...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

The max they can offer a player outside the top 10 rounds is $208,955. Well, looks like they spent all they could. Americaan is a JC guy, but he's not young. Full 21-year-old, just like a college junior would be, and he's older than many of our top-ten college guys (Hoerner, Richan, Weber, Roberts,...

What do we know about Reindl? Does he have big-league potential, or would he just be an organizational filler even if he does sign?

https://twitter.com/jimcallisMLB/status/1012005025823051776?s=19 Damn, more than I thought. That’s slot for the 56th or so pick. The FO clearly loves this kid. I'm always an optimist.... Think it's really exciting that the Cub scouts like the kid that much. Hopefully they'll be vindicated. Still ~$...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

There has been interests/speculation regarding Parker, 28th-round HS pitcher who came to Wrigley. Two rounds prior was another HS guy, outfielder Julian Boyd. In between was a JC pitcher who I believe has signed. Do we know anything about Boyd, and think he might be signable? My recall is that he wa...

Thompson signed. Not much of a believer in the wildmen, but interesting wildcard/longshot.

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

They have $691,255 over slot funds remaining for Roederer, Weber and anyone over $125k past round 10. Yeah, that's still a pretty decent kitty. Roederer will get a chunk, but there will still be some left, I think. I've got no idea with Andy WEber. If he frees up another $100+ underslot, wouldn't b...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Tom, how dated would that video of Franklin be? From last summer? Or woudl that be pretty up-to-date? I'm seeing June 5, 2018 on the thing, is that when it was actually taken?

Wes has linked twitter of Franklin saying he's officially a Cub.

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Yup, thanks. That last bottom line is the one that counts. Mine is roundoff error, but I'm still within $3K. $985K is a non-trivial amount of discretionary dollars to play with. They may have liked your guy Roederer a lot, and perhaps it took more to buy him off that the $1.1 for Davis, will be inte...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

....The second to last line is based only on signed top 10 round picks. The last line is if we assume all remaining top 10 picks signed at their slot + 5%. Not sure I'm tracking, but upon completion of top-10's, that opens up the full $376K in overage, and should make more overage available. So how...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Wow, crazy, that's like 10th-round slot, less than Mort got and no more than senior-sign 22-going-on-23 Casey. Really unexpected that low. By my count, that now puts the Cubs with $983K available for overslot signings. If Roederer and Franlin absorb all of that, that will be very surprising as well....

Update: Erich Uelmen promoted to Myrtle Beach. The Cubs top five picks in 2017: 1 - Little - SB rotation 2 - Lange - MB rotation 3 - Abbott - MB rotation 4 - Thompson - Tennessee's rotation 5 - Uelmen - MB rotation Some nice results half a season in, especially when you consider this regime's previ...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

...Saved about $50k on Herron. Not sure if they've got some formula set up. But it looks to me like other than Hoerner (suppposedly slot), Richan (significant underslot) and Artis (overslot), that the other 4 college picks have all been coming in about 10% underslot, more or less. Wonder if that wi...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

... Just cause he agreed to an underslot bonus doesn't make it "okay". The Cubs liked Davis and Roederer and knew they needed some savings from an underslot signing to be able to afford those two players. Richan was listed very low on national rankings lists and I bet the Cubs didn't have...

Thanks, Cal, that was a **really** interesting interview to listen to. A lot of insights into how they think about prospects, and what they saw in guys rounds 1-5. He has less fastball than all of them, and doesn't even flash a plus secondary like each of those 3 you listed. Those are the big reasons why he was knocked around all year at the college level. It's not always a great thing to throw strikes when your stuff is as mediocre as Richan's . From...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

It will be interesting to see how the Cubs spending does play out. How much will Roederer and franklin get? I've kind of gotten used to Cubs going senior-sign cheap in rounds 8-10, sometimes 7 too. But some things may be different this year? Paying Artis a little OVER in round 7? Reynolds almost ful...

Re: Eugene’s Roster

Casey will be 23 this winter, and pitched 95 innings. A lot of pro pitchers his age go well over 100 innings in a season. From his angle. He's going to be 23 next season. His college-over-pro choice, and recent affirmation that it was the right choice because he wants to be prepared for life after b...
