Re: 2019 AFL

I'm no scout, and don't mean to be a negativist. But the couple of clips of Amaya that I've seen, it doesn't seem like he's got all that much bat speed.

I wonder if he'll have enough to hit well at higher levels, especially big-league level?

Re: Minor League Playoff Discussion & Boxes, 9-14-19

Thanks, Cal. Mid 90's with a sharp breaking ball and a shaky change, that seems like solid stuff, and reasonable for a 2nd-year guy. The note that "Clinton had no answer for his fastball" is interesting. A lot of 93-95 fastballs are pretty hittable, even in A-ball. If his fastball is not o...

Re: Minor League Musings

Abbott was first in the AA Southern League in IP, Ks, 4th in ERA, 2nd in K-BB%, limited line drives and generated popups as a flyball pitcher...Decent prospect too, first maybe underrated Cubs pitching prospect in a few years. Definitely these two seem a step up from when like Nick Struck won pitch...

Re: Minor League Playoff Discussion & Boxes, 9-14-19

Riley Thompson allowed one baserunner on an error, K'd 10 in 5 shutout innings Cubswin and others, what's the word on Riley's stuff these days? Yesterday capped a pretty nice season overall, K/IP around 1, K/BB around 3 not that bad, HR's maybe the yellow-flag. Draft reports were good velocity, and...

Brennen Davis went 3/3 with a HR, BB, and SB He finishes his season hitting 305/.381/.525 with a GO/AO <1, a sub-20% K rate...Just 204 PAs because the org tried to kill him twice, but squeezed all the good stuff in Thanks CR for these everyday That's great to have Davis end up with a big day, and a...

https://twitter.com/jnorris427/status/1168676374481010690?s=19 Nice, nice, nice! Cruz just turned 20 last week, so to be 99-98-99 this young is pretty impressive. Nice to see him end the season with a clean outing. It's curious that he's been so wild in his small sample this season; he didn't walk ...

Did the 10th round catcher ever sign? If so, at slot; or at a super-cheap cash-freeing deal?

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

More than I expected. Thought that there was a report that they'd called a different guy in front of round 3 and asked him to take a bigger sub-slot than that, and didn't select him when he wouldn't go quite low enough? Will be interesting to see whether Cubs start McAvene for a while, and if so for...

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Interesting the 22-year-old senior Combs got $50K. Most of the late senior signs have been $1K or $5K guys. Relative to the Cubs budget, $50K is still nothing, and relative to draft picks it's still nothing. But I'd guess the Cubs must have liked him a little bit more than the average senior roster-...

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

....Surprised Clarke got slot. Yes, same. Seems he's been the least discussed guy, and with the least amount of scouting info, of the top-5 pitchers. But it appears he'll have the 2nd highest bonus. Given the Cubs record with pitching, not sure their interest proves anything good. But, interesting ...

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Had been reference to agreeing for a deal in the low-40's range. $2.0 is in between 36/37. So maybe a little higher than I had expected. Nice to have it done fast, that frees up a bunch of dollars, so it means they can move forward and sign/finalize overslot guys and don't need to wait on all of tho...

...It's a very large recap for every team in MLB so mistakes are bound to happen. Keith Law talks to plenty of scouts and ppl in the industry and his input is valuable. I don't always agree with his take on prospects and he's reluctant to admit when he's wrong, but he knows his stuff. Herz definite...

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/1136995355130769408 Davidjohn Herz (8) was seen as a very tough sign due to his commitment to UNC. He's a right-hander and quarterback, up to 94, very athletic, but fairly raw as a pitcher because he plays three sports. Keith Law, I appreciate your stuff, and I k...

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Some Q's or things I'm interested in, or thoughts: 1. Will be interesting to see how much over Hearn, Herz, and Schlaffer sign for. 2. Given that they call and discuss $$ before selecting anybody, and based on recent history, pretty much a lock that the first 20 guys are all going to get signed. And...

Re: 2019 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Cubs have signed 6th round pick Hearns for 2nd round money. Not to be overly nit-picky, but I think they have "agreed" as opposed to "signed". I believe that means they have agreed to what the deal will be, continent on other guys signing. But, basically they won't want to actua...

8th rounder DJ Herz was ranked 243rd by BA: ....has been up into the mid-90s this spring, but normally settles into the 88-91 mph range, with a below-average arm action and delivery. Last summer at East Coast Pro, Herz threw out of a funky, crossfire delivery and opened up at 87-90 mph, but ticked ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-3-19

Thanks for info, that's great to hear. It would be so helpful if he stayed healthy, and was able to pitch like a guy you could hope for. Particularly with our bullpen this year, if he was able to come up in July and be a guy we looked forward to seeing, that could be a big boost to the team. Likewis...

Re: BA, BP, Fangraphs, Keith Law & MLB Pipeline's Cubs' Top Prospects List

The folks at MLB disagree with both you and I on Swarmer. He didn't make their top 30. And whereas we are two incredibly intelligent Cubs prospect experts, whoever put their list together can't exactly be an idiot. And yet, here we are. I'd have Swarmer around 20, they had him lower than 30. I thin...

.... I don't know what Jaron is talking about when he says "the guys that are hitting around" Amaya being a help to him. That Pelicans line-up looks pretty weak. There are several returning players like Ademan, Mitchell, Wilson and Galindo that could see better numbers the 2nd time around...

Richan was facing South Bend players but still: SP Paul Richan hurled six innings of shutout ball with nine stikeouts (also 6/2 GO/AO, all three hits he allowed were singles, he issued no walks, and he threw 80% strikes) .... Pretty interesting. Nice. I love pitchers with good stuff; and I usually ...

Re: 2019 Opening Day Minor League Rosters

My general view would be that unless a guy is needed for the big-league team, I'd normally prefer to have a guy excel at one level for a somewhat sustainable time prior to jumping them. And I'd generally prefer not to skip levels. An experienced and capable college draftee skipping up to Myrtle, tha...

Re: 2019 Opening Day Minor League Rosters

I got no problem with Davis, Roederer, Morel, etc. starting the year in ExST and then Eugene. Davis and Morel are still quite raw and would benefit from the opportunity for the type of instruction they can get in Mesa. .... I get (and share) the desire and excitement to see them play full season ba...
