Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Thanks, Cal, that was a **really** interesting interview to listen to. A lot of insights into how they think about prospects, and what they saw in guys rounds 1-5. Multiple references to analytics and stuff, including for not only Roberts but also Richan. Thought it interesting that he didn't really...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

He has less fastball than all of them, and doesn't even flash a plus secondary like each of those 3 you listed. Those are the big reasons why he was knocked around all year at the college level. It's not always a great thing to throw strikes when your stuff is as mediocre as Richan's . From...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

It will be interesting to see how the Cubs spending does play out. How much will Roederer and franklin get? I've kind of gotten used to Cubs going senior-sign cheap in rounds 8-10, sometimes 7 too. But some things may be different this year? Paying Artis a little OVER in round 7? Reynolds almost ful...

...I think the biggest issue I had with Richan is simply that, at the moment, it felt like a high floor guy. .... .... I still don't love Richan ... but the system is the system, and there is a need for underslot guys. I don't really follow the "system is the system, and there is a need for un...

Re: Eugene’s Roster

Casey will be 23 this winter, and pitched 95 innings. A lot of pro pitchers his age go well over 100 innings in a season. From his angle. He's going to be 23 next season. His college-over-pro choice, and recent affirmation that it was the right choice because he wants to be prepared for life after b...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

..definitely interested in following how these "cognitive skill darlings" (CSDs for short, that's trademarked) are going to fare. It's clear as day that the Cubs selected their guys and didn't give a crap about where others valued them, or that they had higher bonus demands than the rest ...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

A few days later, and I think I really like the trio of Roberts/Franklin/Thompson a lot more than I originally did. No, we didn't get Casey Mize or any sort of elite pitching prospect (I would note that post-draft, there was a lot of talk by teams that some of the college arms that fell were a bit ...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

.... Keith Law on Roederer: Cole Roederer (2C) is a center fielder now with good feel to hit but has a hitch in his swing that probably has to be cleaned up for him to become a good hitter in pro ball. He also likely ends up in a corner where his fringy power could become an issue, so I'm not sure ...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

.... So I have to say I'm NOT a big fan of these draft selections and this draft class overall for the Cubs. It seriously lacks in upside, and the chances of landing an impact player from this group is very low. ..... What I mean is that this group has an even smaller chance of landing an impact pl...

On a wholly separate note, Been catching up on the draft yesterday. Granted, a chunk of those Day 3 guys won't sign. Still ... as lukewarm as I was to start off the draft this might be my favorite draft under Theo/Jed/Jason. It probably won't have the overall impact of some of the other drafts, but...

Re: 2018 Actual MLB Draft Day(s) Thread

Are we saving for something? Herron is a guy needing TJS and Roberts is an unknown. And a reliever. If these guys are getting slot, I'm surprised. Both Cease and Estrada were 6th-round picks. Maybe this will be the round? D.J. Wilson was 4th round, he's the only other million-dollar superslot I can...

Re: 2018 Draft Thread

No idea what the Cubs strategy will be, in terms of under-or-over-slotting at 24. I imagine they can only have contingent strategies that depend on player evaluation and availability. Mocks vary widely from one analyst to another, and likewise change substantially by the month (or week) for a given ...

Do we have any velocity or scouting reports on him this summer? Is his velocity average enough to be a reasonably legit prospect?

Having him put up some really nice games reminds me that it will be nice to have three 2nd-round picks on Monday.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-23-18

Any velocity updates on recent Lange and Little? Sometimes I get some in April, when it's maybe cold or they haven't really gotten into a groove; but also when they aren't at all tired yet. A couple of months in now with regular rotation, I'm curious what they've got on a good night like this?

Life has been too crazy to read all of the nightly minor league discussion threads.

Has there been scouting info on swarmer? I assume he's standard 90-93 fastball/curve guy?

"Expect" more, yes. But what you heard/reports was 90-92 early, and 88 late. That's about what we've gotten in his earlier bad outings, and as fast or faster than what we heard last summer. So yeah, we all want >92, and expect that based on #1 draft selection and pre-draft scouting reports...

Thanks much for the Little report, Cubswin. 88-92 velocity is what Lester and Quintana use, to variable success I guess; both are control artists. Wonder how well going with average velocity and variable control will work? still hoping to see at least a little more velocity at some point. If they dr...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-19-18

It's a long season. Will be interesting to see how a lot of the pitchers settle in over the marathon. Inconsistency tends to be the name of the game at all levels of baseball, so nothing crazy about ODLC looking bad, then good, then perhaps just as bad next time. Too few starts to figure out what th...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-16-18

Ademan has K'd over 40% of his AB. Obviously early and small sample, but at this point I wonder if his hitting development might not have been better served with a South Bend assignment. Probably makes no difference, though.

...89-92 was what I was told. Thanks rubes. Yeah, for a guy whose scouting reports and 1st-round status assumed a plus fastball, that's nothing to get excited about. Hopefully we'll see better in future. But you'd almost think with the adrenaline of opening day, you might expect extra fast if anyth...
