Re: Cubs trade Eloy, Cease, others for Quintana

God we're really in denial about attrition rates on starting pitchers, aren't we? Quintana is coming off a season with a career-best K rate, had a career-best velocity after joining the Cubs last year, etc. Everything about his peripherals still looked great. His FIP is currently exactly 1 run abov...

Re: Cubs trade Eloy, Cease, others for Quintana

this trade is one month away from being the worst trade in Cubs history. Hyperbole much? I feel like people are generally underestimating how much Eloy will have to hit to be highly valuable. He’s absolutely capable of it because he’s a monster and a special hitting talent, but he plays a position ...

Re: Cubs Acquire Brandon Kintzler for Minor Leaguer Jhon Romero

I just remembered that I "met" him 2 weeks ago in Disney World. He was at ESPNZone doing an interview and that's where we had dinner that night. I really miss Chicago's ESPN Zone. I went once... to watch this game. So it was a pretty good time (hours after going to watch Kordell Stewart a...

Re: Sources: Cubs have a deal in place for Cole Hamels

One thing I noticed is that Hamel's ERA entering July was 3.61 before 4 really poor starts. I'm thinking his peripherals predicted this decline based on how poor they are now but its also possible he is also suffering through a dead arm period or something like that. Brooks has Hamels’ velocity in ...

Re: Cubs acquire Jesse Chavez from Texas!

Seems like his stuff is playing fine out of the pen. Velocity is up from last year to where it was at his peak. His Contact% is way down. Hardly walking anyone. Homers are a big problem. But maybe they are trying to Dan Haren it and Cub Defense his way to them being solo homers. Either way, he's Lu...

Re: THE Bryce Harper in 2018 Thread

I don't get the lack of respect that you guys (and Maddon) have for Almora. Suggestions of trading him or making him a platoon player are ridiculous. Almora is leading the team in hitting and was hitting 100 points higher than Schwarber last year while Maddon "searched" for a leadoff man....

Re: I like Gold Gloves and I cannot lie: the Jason Heyward thread

.760 OPS on the season.

vs righties:

.305/.363/.458, 122 wRC+, 8.2 BB%, 8.8 K%.

Even got that wRC+ up to 51 vs lefties!

Will probably see his 7.9 BB% go up a little bit, especially if teams are actually kinda scared of him now.

Re: Baez impresses Baez

since manfred lets you just do an intenetional walk without throwing the pitches can we just elect to do a javy strikeout to save time He’s literally driven in more runs than anyone in the National League. this is a pretty weak take; he's seen 4th-most baserunners in the league and has 84 wRC+ spli...

Re: Darvish to DL, Tricep Tendonitis

This is usually a bad thing, isn’t it? What’s bizarre is I felt his stuff the last two starts looked like normal (pre-Cub) Yu Darvish. Obviously with pitchers, who the horsefeathers knows, and guys still pitch through these things frequently. Or maybe it happened in a side session, etc. But this ti...

He's going to somehow get Baltimore to take Heyward for Machado because...wizard. So let's say Baltimore were to take most/all of Heyward's contract (and his weak pop outs to the SS behind 3B)....how much more in layer compensation would the Cubs need to come up with? For instance, if Addy, Monty a...

Re: Things are looking Grimm for Justin

According to Sharma it looks like Anthony Bass is likely going to get the last spot in the bullpen now that Grimm is bad. Really? Anthony Bass is the guy they take? I think I'd prefer Eddie Butler for that last spot. I'm guessing they want Butler to stretch out in case they need a spot start. But y...

Re: Offseason Transactions

Cashner gets 2/16 from the O's lol - he's going to suck. How do you have a K/9 of 4 when you throw mid 90s and have decent secondary stuff? That seems impossible for a number of reasons, especially with the current strikeout heavy environment. I mean Uehara had a K/9 of 10 throwing 78 MPH fastballs...

Re: NL Central Also-Rans: Reds, Brewers, Pirates

I think the thought, besides flipping Santana for pitching, is to let Braun start at first base against every lefty and maybe even some righties. Thames was brutal against lefties last year, and really a sub-800 OPS in the second half for a first baseman isn't going to cut it either. Braun at first...

bruce levine was saying we should pass on bryce harper because we have enough offense and pitching is what we need to pay for. this annoyed me greatly. Yeah, passing on 26 year olds that have already had a 9.5 fWAR season and just had a better OPS than a dude that cranked 59 dongs seems like a grea...

Re: Cubs Offseason Rumors

Imagining a trade deadline one half a season before a lot of top tier players become free agents could create some good deals while teams try to free up salary/contract guarantees before the free agent window opens. I'd rather wait and see if there are some needs/deals at the deadline rather than u...
