Re: Minor League Musings

Abbott was first in the AA Southern League in IP, Ks, 4th in ERA, 2nd in K-BB%, limited line drives and generated popups as a flyball pitcher...Decent prospect too, first maybe underrated Cubs pitching prospect in a few years. Definitely these two seem a step up from when like Nick Struck won pitch...

Re: Minor League Musings

https://twitter.com/Cubs/status/1173631558156214272 Haven't looked at the numbers, but kind of surprising that the 100+ MPH lefty that was unhittable for the 2nd half isn't the pitcher of the year. Because he was hittable and walked a decent amount of guys the 1st half. Marquez wins 2nd Half pitche...

Re: Trade targets 2019

Chatwood and Happ for Jed Lowrie is something I like and thinks makes sense for everyone involved. Mets need to fill their rotation and get Happ to take Lowrie’s role for the trouble and Chatwood costing $3 mil more than Lowrie. Lowrie helps with the contact issues and helps the offensive depth and...

https://twitter.com/BaseballAmerica/status/1173318067146940416?s=20 Boooooooooo, I don't think the Brewers or Mets are that bad either. I'd proooooobably go with the Nats' as the worst. The Yankees' isn't so hot either, they're system is structured like the Cub' with a nominal #1 up top because he ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-25-19

Man, Cory Abbott is on some kind of roll. In the month of August: 5 G, 30.2 IP, 11 H, 6 BB, 40 K, 1.17 ERA, .107 BAA, 0.55 WHIP. He's averaging 7 innings per start this month without exceeding his 100 pitch cutoff (one game was a rain-shortened affair in which he only went 3). He's led the Cubs sys...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-20-19

Marquez hit 102 on the stadium gun again last night. Ho hum. The 20th could be Gallardo's last outing of the season....17 YO will walk into that outing with a 4.28 ERA/4.61 RA9 in a league where the average is 4.36/5.44, has 3 PAs against a hitter younger than him, his 3% HR/FB is strong, and a 12:3...

Re: Minor League Musings

As a big believer that the general philosophy is to develop bats and buy putching, I like to follow non-Cubs pitching prospects closer than the bats and one of the potentially good ones is getting called up: AJ Puk will work out of the A's bullpen. Pre-TJ Puk was filthy, a giant lefty with a mid-up...

Damn. Abbott is on fire lately. 12 Ks tonight in 6.2 innings. He punched out 10 last time out in 7 innings, and 9 in 7 innings the start before that.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-14-19

There really should not be any inevitable struggles from a 1st round collegiate SP in short season ball. I realize the previous 1st round pitchers taken have set a very low bar, but even the 3rd and 4th rounders from this year have had zero issues at all in short season ball. Jensen's command is pr...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-14-19

I like that Jensen is managing the inevitable struggles within his outings well more often than not. Walked the bases loaded with no one out in the first giving up just a run and picking up a couple Ks to get out of it. Threw a couple shutout innings after with a couple Ks. Including NCAA he's at 1...

Re: Minor League Musings

I checked on the former Cub farmhands that were dealt at the deadline, and it's interesting to me that the Tigers have used Alex Lange exclusively in relief since acquiring him. Same iffy results as when he was a starter, but still interesting that they immediately started that transition. Richan pi...

Alzolay with 2 hits allowed, 0 BBs and 5 Ks through 3 shutout innings. Great bounce back effort so far.

Russell with a HBP and another bomb. Maybe a team this offseason would still trade something for him if he keeps mashing at AAA? Haha, who am I kidding. Everyone mashes at AAA this year.

Jose Lopez is having one odd season in the DSL. 59 of his 115 PAs have ended with no ball in play, either a walk or a K. His K rate is well over league average, he's hitting .210, but he has a .26 GO/AO and has flashed a dynamic power/speed combo. He probably sucks and Pinaaaangoooooo is the dude, ...

Kohl Franklin just keeps doing his thing. 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. It's interesting to me that they have him on such a strict pitch count. I don't recall seeing it this drastic before in prospects that are not in their draft years. Of course, we haven't had any pitchers worth following that close...
