Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-17-18

Seeing Keegan Thompson going today made me think of the top prospect list over at Bleachernation. I normally don't read anything over there written by Luke Blaize, but had some time to kill (apologies Luke, if you post over here as well). It's pretty awful, IMO. 1. Miguel Amaya 2. Keegan Thompson 3....

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-14-18

I'm not that worried about the fastball velocity. It feels like he's throwing a lot more 2-seamers now than before, and it's obviously not going to top out at as high a velocity. If there are reports that his 4-seamer is sitting there ... then I'd be a touch concerned. It's been his 4-seam velocity...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-14-18

90-92 fastball for Lange, on a good day, isn't super inspiring. I've been surprised that after all the curveball buzz, that he hasn't K'd more guys. K-rate hasn't been bad, or anything, but given how few A-ballers can hit average curves, much less excellent ones, I'd have figured he'd have a few mo...

Alexander Ovalles, who hasn't played in a while for the DSL Cubs, is the PTBNL in the Hamels deal. He showed some aptitude this year Dang. I liked what little I read about this kid. Apparently he is recovering from having a hamate bone removed. But I suppose one has to give something up when acquir...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 8-6-18

16-year-old Reivaj Garcia went 2-for-3 notching his 13th multi-hit game and keeping his average around .300. Very little power (only 7 XBH, all doubles) but that's to be expected at 16 (he'll finally turn 17 next week). That he's hitting this well in the AZL at this age is fun, but the fact that he...

And the MFer went and got HBP again. At least he stayed in the game after that though. He has reached base 5 times in 8 professional PAs, with the 2 HBPs and 3 BBs.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-31-18

Healthy arms don't generally lose velocity at all during a player's late teens and early 20's. Huh? A prep player that is throwing 94 at 18, will in the vast majority of cases, still be throwing 94 as a 21 year old as long as his arm has been healthy. There have been some studies showing this. The ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-31-18

It would hardly be unprecedented for a healthy arm to gain velocity as a pro, particularly nowadays with more research than ever available to teams and reps on the subject. I honestly can't think of one guy who had such a drop in velo during his college years; still didn't gain anything back after ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-31-18

Lange needs to have a monster K day today. And to also get back the 3-4 mph on his fastball from his Frosh year at LSU. I don't know if that velocity from 4 years ago is going to return (it could), but if he's gonna have a monster K day, it's likely going to be because of the excellent change up he...

600k? Holy horsefeathers. I know Gaston has the tinge of a potential failed PED test. Wonder if Osiel does too. Yeah, it's got to be something. I know most of the IFA money was already spent when Rodriguez became available, but I'm sure some team somewhere would have been willing to give him more t...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-30-18

IMO, they'd have to bounce perfectly every day for that to happen. Cahill held AA batters to a .190 AVG at the age of 20 and has held major leaguers to a .254 BAA with much better ground ball numbers. Robinson has allowed a roughly .290 BAA to date in AA at the age of 24. Cahill's stuff prior to in...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-30-18

Duncan Robinson really needs to be promoted to AAA. He has nothing left to prove at AA, and the Cubs aren't one of those teams that promotes prospects straight out of AA. He has some pretty good numbers there, what kind of stuff does he have/throw? So I believe he has no true "plus" pitch...

Okay, what the horsefeathers? On the evening of July 22nd, Cole Roederer had just completed his 3rd multi-hit effort in 4 games and was batting .404/.509/.702 with 10 walks and just 7 Ks. Andy Weber mercifully had the night off because he had completed his 3rd 0-for-4 night in 6 games the evening b...

Edmond Americaan with another good game. He's old for a JuCo guy (21), but he certainly appears to be performing up to his scouting report (speedy CF that can get on base).

The speed added to the system from the 2018 draft is pretty impressive.
