Re: General Cubs Chit-Chat

Yep. Rene Rivera would be a perfect addition for that role.

Re: The Terrible Umpires Thread

Never forget Phil Cuzzi. He was the plate umpire for the no hitter by Hamels, both of the losses by Jake after May 17, 2015, the hack job that was Game 1 of the NLDS and the only umpire to ever eject Miguel Montero (catcher of 8000+ innings and batter of 4000+ plate appearances). Add the only umpir...

Re: "horsefeathers looks like The Thing" - The Kyle Schwarber Thread

I agree this is probably best-case scenario, too. His arm makes up for him being a big lug in a corner outfield spot. But he's not going to have much value on defense. His power is topped out unless he starts getting the ball in the air more often. He's always going to strike out because he is so p...

He sucks and we were always wrong to not hate him.

Mostly, he's a horsefeathers person and can get horsefeathers.

Re: "horsefeathers looks like The Thing" - The Kyle Schwarber Thread

Overall, he's about what I was hoping for. I agree he's probably been a little unlucky with his strike zone. He's made real strides in making more contact and especially closing holes in his swing in the zone. He's also showing a better eye at the plate. I think his most significant changes have bee...

Re: How much is 1 WAR worth?

Here's my honest assessment of our pitching right now. We need Darvish back and we need him to pitch well. It would be huge. We obviously shouldn't count on it and we all should probably plan for him to never throw another pitch for the 2018 Cubs. But one can hope. Kyle Hendricks is completely fine....

Also, the 2006 Red Sox finished with a negative run differential and accrued the 22nd-highest position player WAR. We're not the 2006 Red Sox.

Re: How much is 1 WAR worth?

The rotation pretty much all sucking when it was supposed to be our strength is one of the strangest things ever to me I really don't think the rotation was supposed to be our strength. Position players are more important. There are more of them. They play everyday. They are important to scoring ru...

Our three replacement-level acquisitions are our three best pitchers, so why not try a below-replacement level guy? https://splicetoday.imgix.net/uploads/posts/photos/22935/holographic-universe-640x440-1.jpg?ixlib=rails-2.1.2&auto=format&dpr=2&fit=clamp&w=400&widths=%5B544%2C%207...

Re: David Bote is a Golden God and Deserves His Own Thread

Yeah I'm not super high on the predictive power of launch angle and exit velocity, despite the fact that you'd think they'd be incredible for that. Pre-statcast we'd handwave all sorts of small sample size stuff away as luck that's unlikely to repeat itself....and most of the time we'd be right. No...

That's a pretty textbook example of counting the same thing twice.

Not really -- e.g, Giancarlo Stanton.

This is one the reasons Mike Trout is so good despite lower exit velocities.

Re: David Bote is a Golden God and Deserves His Own Thread

From May 2016: I think that Soler has been a little unlucky. His average exit velocity is 92.3mph, which is about the same as Rizzo's exit velocity. And his exit velocity has been stable - standard deviation is only 12.7mph. As a comparison, Harper's exit velocity is 91.7mph and standard deviation ...
