Re: Stats and Context

Btw pretty crazy how that one quote by one coach at the High A level after one game by one pitcher has really taken on a life of it's own. Since it appeared the quote has been said to explain fluctuating K rates in minor league pitchers, represent a shift in philosophy for one player, for the team, ...

Re: RE: Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-22-17

Cease said this. Which is nothing revelatory but you figure they have told this to each pitching prospect. If he can stay healthy and continue to pitch well, the young starter could be on his way to High-A at midseason. But before he can start thinking about getting promoted to a new level, Cease k...

Re: Stats and Context

As far as the main thrust of the thread goes, the biggest thing for me is that the absolute rule is prospects fail. I find it much easier to frame understanding of a prospect's chances when you understand that the default is not how successful the player will be, but if he will ever even spend a da...

https://mobile.twitter.com/BaseballAmerica/status/853609037568626688 That's some early season video of Hatch. There's a lot to like. Good build, still projectable and there's already some physicality there, flexible, repeats his delivery, can elevate and sink, everything comes out of the same arm sl...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-21-17

I like that Alzolay has logged his innings. 121+ last year and he'll top 100 again this year barring unforeseen injury. Even if you don't expect him to last as a starter, and I don't, it's nothing but a good thing to pile up reps and stay healthy. It's a long season no matter your role in the majors...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-20-17

Don't blame you for not remembering this but Jokisch racked up 14.1 big league innings in 2014. Chris Rusin also comes to mind and he has carved up a career being a long man/spot starter for the Rockies. Yep, unless giving up 6 HRs over the span of 7 innings or whatever it was is a forever thing Ke...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-20-17

At least Crawford had some athleticism and upside , though. He really doesn't, org filler The 4th player/trade filler thing is true that of all the pitchers. Nobody is coming to the Cubs for their pitching prospects, hence the pitching need/s. The hope is that nobody gets hurt or horsefeathers the ...

Re: The Starting Pitching Trade Candidates

I'd be thrilled if they could find a way to land any of Kolby Allard,Brent Honeywell, Reynaldo Lopez, Cal Quantill,Mike Soroka etc. I mean one of Mitchell White,Walker Buehler or Yadier Alvarez has to be available right? The Dodgers have a dozen SP as is. I've been wondering about one of that Snell...

Just want to take this opportunity to wish the Braves no success moving forward. $400 million+ without a vote for a stadium that wasn't even a little bit necessary, goooo horsefeathers yourselves.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-20-17

Do scouts even go to watch Kellogg pitch? I'm truly asking. No. If he's on the mound, then cool. But, they're looking at other guys for the most part. Might as well take a few notes. But, he's not even a top 30 prospect in a middling system. If there was ANY buzz whatsoever on him, BA, BP, FG, or L...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-20-17

Do scouts even go to watch Kellogg pitch? I'm truly asking. Given that he was a well known and accomplished college pitcher for a legendary program, was tabbed as an upside guy going into said program, and was drafted fairly high for an unsignable HS kid - it's pretty safe to say that scouts have g...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-19-17

so basically you are saying they're not "Kellogg material"? They all share the similarity of not being particularly strong SP prospects actually. Honestly, I just thought it was amusing. Fair enough. I've enjoyed the many different versions and meanings of that one pitch to contact quote ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-19-17

I rarely comment but I read a lot of the comments here. I haven't read anyone calling Delacruz's inexperience as "purely a plus". If he were pitching in the majors it wouldn't be a plus but he's a prospect, so his inexperience means he still has more room left on his learning curve than a...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-19-17

My issue with de la Cruz and Clifton are less K related and more that they're not particularly good at anything. They're both fly ball pitchers without good control or command of their fastballs or stuff in general, they're not good at keeping the ball in the park, and neither is so good at getting ...

Re: The Starting Pitching Trade Candidates

I'd much prefer Berrios struggle on the Twins than do what he did Thursday. He's on the short list of longer term SPs it would be nice to see the Cubs land, many if not all boxes checked. Please cut the horsefeathers and pitch worse. Nice to see Daniel Norris scufflIng a little bit. Maybe Detroit th...

Sure would be nice if Kellogg could avoid a HR or five today. Maybe just start pitching better in general, all hands on deck for the approaching trade season and all.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-19-17

Tom's not impressed when's de la Cruz is economical and gets through 7 because he only has a strikeout. He's not impressed with 5 Ks in 5.1 because he runs out of gas in the 6th. Shrug indeed. Does it even matter that I've singled out the HR multiple times as what drags down the outing? That makes ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-19-17

De La Cruz has been pretty damn good this year. He's easily the most exciting pitching prospect we've got outside of Cease and maybe Albertos, depending on what he looks like in real game action. He's still learning to pitch, he's not got that many innings under his belt and he's got excellent scou...

:shrugs: Standards are higher, I imagine. What's the difference between meh and pretty good anyway? Beyond connotation probably, seems maybe it is also tied with how willing you are to dismiss or brush aside the HR allowed. That's not a particularly great way to leave the game either. The reliever l...
