Re: The Starting Pitching Trade Candidates

Sonny Gray‘s two most recent starts for the Athletics have altered his stock in a hurry, writes ESPN’s Buster Olney. Gray’s struggles over the past 13 to 14 months have been tied not only to injury but to a (quite possibly related) drop in his swinging-strike rate, but he’s racked up swings-and-mis...

7 Ks for de la Cruz but also 5 hits including his 5th HR allowed in ~45 IP this year.

Not really avoiding with 4 hits in those two innings, no?

Martinez is 2-2 too

Tseng with a quality outing so far - 4 IP, 5 Ks, 1 BB, 2 Hs...50 IP, 40 Ks, 8 BBs, 4 HRs, 4 Hs this season. All hands on deck for trade season!

Re: 2017 Draft Thread

Odorizzi has been a 2-3 WAR guy. If you end up getting a consistent, durable 2-3 WAR guy at end of round 1, that's not bad. But if that's the prospect's ceiling? Different story. Few guys reach or sustain their ceiling, so if that's the best you might possible get, and there is an 80% probability t...

If you told me right now we could guarantee ourselves 2, 2-3 WAR players at 27 and 30 right now and give up all upside and downside for being locked in to that, I'd take it every time.

Re: Cubs trading Soler to KC for Wade Davis

What I will say is that I proposed Soler + Grimm for Justin Wilson before the season and let's just say, the idea was not met with positive responses. Who cares. No big deal. But JFC that would have been a coup. Wilson has been ridiculous. Now he's gonna get a massive haul if they move him at the d...

7 IP/ 5 Ks/ 0 BBs/ 0 HR/ 8 Hs for Steele

He's given up 5 HRs in 181 pro innings with nearly a K per inning pitched.

Guardians was forgettable. Elizabeth Debicki should go out with me. Covenant was really good, or at least way better than I expected, if you can get past basic movie holes like emotional astronauts.

Re: The Starting Pitching Trade Candidates

A lot of these elite arm, big trades requires two top level prospects to ship out, and much as I have said I like the system's depth this year moreso than past years, there are plenty of teams with more quality depth than us. Like I noted, yes, you can piece together, say, Javier Baez, Eloy Jimenez...

Re: 2017 Draft Thread

Not a mock but Matthew Sauer and Blayne Enlow are 27 and 30 on the FanGraphs board. Sauer seems interesting with a great frame and athletic delivery. I'm meh on Enlow, ceiling sounds along the lines of an Odorizzi.

Re: ITT: Raisin & Tom/King Kong Obsess Over Shohei Otani

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/05/scouting-shohei-otani.html I'm surprised by the 6 ceiling as a position player. I think he would swing and miss a whole lot, already does (98 Ks in 383 PAs last year). My favorite thing about his hitting is that it speaks to what an otherworldly athlete he is c...

Re: 2017 Draft Thread

OK, Hans Crouse is on that wish list for 27 or 30 and probably first among the HS pitchers. Seems like he runs away with being the best combo of arm strength, size, and athleticism among the first tier HS arms.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-23-17

AZPhil happened to share some thoughts on Sierra the other day: CHILDERB3: Jonathan Sierra has been comped to a young Daryl Strawberry, and you can see why when he takes BP or runs the bases or tracks fly balls or makes throws from the outfield. No question he is a "toolsy" player with plu...

Re: Stats and Context

Btw pretty crazy how that one quote by one coach at the High A level after one game by one pitcher has really taken on a life of it's own. Since it appeared the quote has been said to explain fluctuating K rates in minor league pitchers, represent a shift in philosophy for one player, for the team, ...

Re: RE: Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-22-17

Cease said this. Which is nothing revelatory but you figure they have told this to each pitching prospect. If he can stay healthy and continue to pitch well, the young starter could be on his way to High-A at midseason. But before he can start thinking about getting promoted to a new level, Cease k...

Re: Stats and Context

As far as the main thrust of the thread goes, the biggest thing for me is that the absolute rule is prospects fail. I find it much easier to frame understanding of a prospect's chances when you understand that the default is not how successful the player will be, but if he will ever even spend a da...

https://mobile.twitter.com/BaseballAmerica/status/853609037568626688 That's some early season video of Hatch. There's a lot to like. Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-21-17

I like that Alzolay has logged his innings. 121+ last year and he'll top 100 again this year barring unforeseen injury. Even if you don't expect him to last as a starter, and I don't, it's nothing but a good thing to pile up reps and stay healthy. It's a long season no matter your role in the majors...

Don't blame you for not remembering this but Jokisch racked up 14.1 big league innings in 2014. Chris Rusin also comes to mind and he has carved up a career being a long man/spot starter for the Rockies. Yep, unless giving up 6 HRs over the span of 7 innings or whatever it was is a forever thing Ke...

At least Crawford had some athleticism and upside , though. He really doesn't, org filler The 4th player/trade filler thing is true that of all the pitchers. Nobody is coming to the Cubs for their pitching prospects, hence the pitching need/s. The hope is that nobody gets hurt or horsefeathers the ...
