Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 7-16-19

The Duane Underwood conversion to relief looks like it's bearing fruit. He converted May 31st and his first appearance sucked, but since June 1st: 13 Gs, 19 IP, 15 H, 5 BB, 0 HR, 25 K 1.89/2.11 ERA/FIP I dont have anything on his groundball rate since the switch, but given how the ball is flying in ...

Re: Chicago Bears offseason

Football Outsiders released their 2019 almanac today. Still digging through, but some interesting nuggets so far: - The Bears project as the 16th best team in the NFL, with 7.9 wins. 18th on Offense, 4th on defense, 28th on ST, and the 5th hardest schedule - The Packers project to win the division, ...

Re: Video Game Thread

Wife and kids are going to in-laws for a week; help me choose the video game I’ll buy for this momentous occasion: -Assassins Creed Odyssey: I’ve played and completed every single assassins creed game and while I enjoyed the gameplay of origins, the story bored me and seemed hard to get into and by...

Re: On Bended Knee - The Rizzo Thread

So it has now been a full month since Rizzo last hit a HR and going all the back to June 1st his SLG is .438. I know the OBP is still there, but I'm starting to get a bit worried here. Power is streaky. UMFan did a great job of showing it with Rizzo, but it's true for everyone. If a guy hits 26 hom...

Re: Martin Maldonado to Cubs

I've thought about this trade more......and I'm still annoyed we sold so low on Monty for a backup catcher we could've had for $2 million in the offseason. I'm not questioning that Maldonado fits an important need, and is good to have with Willy on the IL. And I figured we'd be trading Monty anyway...

Re: Martin Maldonado to Cubs

I feel like some people have a weird obsession with balance. Willson's been the 4th best catcher in baseball this year. If he were 9th, but had positive numbers on both offense and defense, he'd get practically no criticism.

Re: Martin Maldonado to Cubs

I know Monty has been bad and hurt this year but trading him straight up for a rental backup catcher is beyond horsefeathering stupid. I'm actually mad about this. Caratini has been solid as a backup and 2B has been a black hole and the pen is a mess but ok. Yeah wtf this trade makes no horsefeathe...

Re: Martin Maldonado to Cubs

Caratini has been great this year. He looks like a solid if unspectacular 2.5-3 win catcher. He could probably bring back something pretty legit given the price and control. Maybe the headliner for Whit Merrifield?

Or Willson's foot is dead, but that's too sad of a scenario for me to think about.

Re: 2019 is Jason Heyward fixed thread

Even with a strong finish to the season I don't think Heyward opts out. If he were a FA this winter I think he'd be in line for something like what McCutchen got last winter. Maybe a 4th year because he's younger? Regardless that's obviously less than what he's currently owed. That being said, he co...

Re: Trade targets 2019

Sogard would be a good fit and he serves as a pretty direct one for one replacement for Descalso. If your expectations are calibrated to "league average hitter when shielded from tough lefties" rather than what he's done so far in 2019, he's a good get. Also, he's a proven adequate option...

Re: Minor League Musings

I don't see a great the case for Hoerner as a top 50 prospect either, but it would be convenient to see him on one or two. If he did, I suspect alot of it would be on the Cubs' history of first round college bats. Law hits the nail on the head harping on the tools and missed games/reps in the wider...

Yu since May 15th: 66.1 IP 17 BB (6.3%) 75 K (27.8%) 12 HR 4.34/4.24/3.56 ERA/FIP/xFIP I don't want to be like "yay he's fixed he's just been juiced balled" because frankly he's a guy who's always allowed a few more dongs than you'd expect. That being said, conservatively I think Yu has wo...

Re: Kris Bryant is awesome and we were always right to love him

2 Observations from his event just now:

1. The picture on the Redbull can looks almost nothing like him

2. He wasn't able to hit any balls across the river so obviously his shoulder is horsefeathered again

Re: Kris Bryant is awesome and we were always right to love him

I'm generally in the "clutch is noise" camp, however I think there is some reason it may persist in the numbers even if it's not some moral failing: 1. Good hitters are always going to suffer because managers are managing to them. For example, you'll bring in the closer in the 8th to face...

Re: Trade targets 2019

As a big Schwarber fan and defender, even I think it might be time to pull the plug there. The perfect upgrade for this team is probably an everyday CF who can mash lefties, but unless you are comfortable with Mitch Haniger's gruesome medicals that guy is just not really out there for trade. That me...

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Minor League Musings

Not to belabor the point, but when you say that you wish McLeod was better at later round picks, someone mentions Bote, and you go "woah woah woah not THAT late" you're absolutely moving the goalposts. Also, if we're going to discount Cease, which honestly I don't think is completely unfai...

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Minor League Musings

Your point is valid, but they got super lucky on Bote. Great late round pick, but you don't expect that kind of success from a late round pick. This is exactly the point, it's more or less a dice roll. Bote was far from being alone in that regard, that draft also had college draftees in rounds 15+ ...
