Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

Hoffman's always been a guy people think will pop after leaving the Rockies, but this still seems most likely to be a fairly nothing trade

Re: General Chit-Chat thread

IMO most turkey hate is because people haven't had a good one. It's real easy to screw up though so it's understandable. But good turkey is horsefeathering awesome. That said, I made this last weekend just because pork shoulders were on sale: https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2011/12/ultra-crispy-...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

I haven't thought deeply about this, but I think it's worth considering that there's a spectrum involved with the approach to the next 1-3 years. Yes, the last time the Cubs had a regime change they were very bad for several years in order to get the talent that propelled them to success. They also...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

https://twitter.com/IDPH/status/1330572445426790403?s=19 Illinois is pretty clearly starting to come off its peak for this wave of Covid. Testing numbers have been coming down for more than a week, and I believe this is the first day in quite a while where hospitalization numbers have come down as w...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

https://twitter.com/kileymcd/status/1329796202389499904?s=19 Kiley suggests the Rays for Bryant, though TBF it's in more of a dot-connecty than rumor-y way: Acquiring Kris Bryant and his roughly $20 million salary in his final arbitration season for some midlevel prospects would be an intriguing and...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

Honestly, if you are going a full re-start, then you need to place all your chips into restocking the system. As much as there's some high level intrigue now, most of it is far away with a lot of risk at hand. If you are selling, then you need to go all-in on selling, and if that's the case, your t...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

https://twitter.com/BleacherNation/status/1329454407747039241?s=19 Yeah it really sounds like this is gonna happen. Interestingly though, it sounds like they're open to moving pitching, but not necessarily pushing for it. If you combine these last few national reports with what we've heard from the ...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/1329039922133684224?s=19 Now that Theo Epstein has stepped down, what do you expect to see from the Cubs the rest of this offseason? Buster Olney: Massive turnover. The Cubs have signaled to other teams they are going to alter the core of position players that ...

Re: Theo stepping down

I'm assuming it'll go to Kantrovitz or Jared Porter. Yeah, Sharma's article from yesterday indicated that Kantrovitz and/or Craig Breslow are due to get promoted, and they're looking at Porter or Amiel Sawdaye from Arizona as outside hires. Sawdaye, for people who don't know, was under Theo and Jed...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

I'm curious if anyone has seen this where they live, since I discovered it in the summer I've been regularly checking the regional hospital capacity statistics provided by the state as a barometer for adjusting my own behavior. Our area has seen a huge spike in cases for a long enough period of tim...

Nothing all that interesting on the Cubs front, but I thought this was a good team-by-team level setting exercise.

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

https://twitter.com/fangraphs/status/1328797642378326018?s=19 I've been thinking a lot about something like this. Obviously with Javy already in hand importing a full middle infield isn't necessary, but what about one of these guys plus Jackie Bradley Jr? Bryant probably has to go to make the money ...

Re: Theo stepping down

This sucks, but I am glad they're doing it now. I'm sure some if it is lip-service, but he's not wrong when he says that with the long term decisions that need to be made this offseason it makes more sense for Jed to be the guy. I do also wonder if this means the offseason is going to be more orient...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

I still do not get the thinking, BN's writers like to do this too, that the Cubs will dump their current starters because budgetz to then go pay more money in FA for older starters. How does that work? Are they looking to be competitive in 2021 by signing those guys? The budget is keeping them from...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

It's probably too soon to say anything, but it looks like Illinois may have leveled off. The positivity rate more than tripled over the course of a month starting in early October, but it has held steady at ~12.5% for the last week. IMO it looks like closing indoor dining stopped the bleeding, but m...

Braves Sign Drew Smyly for 1Y $11M

His spin and velo both spiked in limited action last year. Even still, this provides a hopeful piece of evidence for this market not being a total horsefeathering disaster.

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

A few less talked about teams that I think make sense for Kris Bryant: Mets - JD Davis is about as much of a 3B as Ryan Braun was. Jeff McNeil can play it but I think they like moving him around a la Ben Zobrist. Acquiring KB for primarily $ and keeping the farm intact is exactly the type of move th...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

I'm in a fantasy league with some friends who have since moved all over the country. This week I was matched up against a high school friend who is now an ER doctor in Chicago. She had three inactive players on her roster. I've never seen her do this before. This is my new COVID index. Things seem ...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

Brother's girlfriend is a surgeon and was telling me that she (and co-workers) are pretty worried because it sounds like they'll be the first to receive the vaccine and that it will be more or less mandatory, and she thinks it's almost like a guinea pig situation. I know they've done plenty of test...
